| SJW - ENGLISH IN LONDON |
| Academy SJW (St John's Wood School) was founded in 1952 by Jimmy Shorrocks. Jimmy was a Lancashire lad - born in Blackpool in the north of England, where his family owned a seaside hotel - but he was educated in Belgium. Jimmy felt that a knowledge of the culture and languages of other countries was essential to the promotion of peace and understanding in the modern world. For this reason, he decided to open SJW. Jimmy managed SJW School until his retirement in 1989. He died in July 1994. Jimmy's widow Erika, who is from Hamburg in Germany, is still very much involved with the school. SJW School is accredited by the British Council, and is a member of English UK. St John's Wood School is located in Boundary Road, St John's Wood, London - not far from Regent's Park and the world-famous Abbey Road recording studios. St John's Wood is a pleasant, residential area, with tree-lined streets and elegant edwardian houses, but Boundary Road contains lots of shops, restaurants and pubs. SJW School is now run by principal Pete Bulmer, who joined SJW in 1983, and his wife Trini Palomar. Trini, who has the RSA Welfare Officers Certificate, controls all elements of student enrolment and welfare. Like Jimmy, Pete comes from Lancashire and is a fervent supporter of Manchester City Football club. Director of Studies is Emma Rodrigues. Emma has been at SJW School for almost ten years, and has a Master's degree in English Language Teaching. |
