How
easy it is to forget about poor ole Lookout Rock. It has one of
the worst locations in the park, but is a great landmark and destination
for many reasons. First is its seclusion. If you are looking for a
place to go to be all alone, you wouldn't go to Wedding Rock, nor would
you go to Ceremonial Rock. You could go down to Mussel Rock but what if
you don't want to climb over a bunch of rocks. You could go to the
Native Plant Garden, but no one has done any gardening there for
centuries. So, the best place to go is Lookout Rock. To get there just
take the
road towards Wedding Rock and go into the parking lot. Don't be tempted
to go west to the rock, instead take the trail south. There you
will see a sign for Patrick's Point and Lookout Rock. Follow the trail
and
don't be tempted to go out to Patrick's Point. Continue on until you hit
the trail to climb Lookout Rock. The trail may be semi-grown over, but
that's just because an estimated 3% of park visitors climb the rock
during their stay. Once you get to the top, take the time to enjoy the
view, see if you can find the latitude/longitude doo-hickey, and maybe
even see if you can find an alternate route down the rock...but
"Lookout" for the rangers in the Wedding Rock parking lot!
