LAMBDA ALPHA COLLEGIATE HONORS SOCIETY FOR ANTHROPOLOGY San Jose State University Chapter

ARTICLE I: NAME

  • Section 1: The name of the organization shall be Lambda Alpha Collegiate Honors Society for Anthropology, San Jose State University Chapter.

ARTICLE II: PURPOSE

  • Section 1: The purpose of the society shall be to honor excellence by recognizing the achievements of anthropology students at San Jose Sate University.

ARTICLE III: AFFILIATION

  • Section 1: Lambda Alpha of San Jose State University of exists as a chapter of the National Collegiate Honors Society for Anthropology, LAMBDA ALPHA, founded at Wichita State University.

ARTICLE IV: MEMBERSHIP

  • Section 1: Minimum requirements for active student membership shall be:
    1. Completion of no less than twelve (12) semester hours or the equivalent in academic Anthropology.
    2. An average grade in these courses of not less than "B" or 3.0. 3.5 - 3.75
    3. A cumulative point average of not less than 2.5. 2.75 - 3.0
  • Section 2: Voting membership is restricted to matriculated, currently enrolled students, Anthropology faculty, and Anthropology Department staff at San Jose State University.
  • Section 3: At least eighty percent (80%) of all members of the organization are matriculated, currently enrolled students at San Jose State University.
  • Section 4: Membership in the organization will not be denied to anyone on the basis of race, religion, national origin, age, sex, disability, veteran's status, or sexual orientation, except as sanctioned by law (California Administrative Code, Title 5, Section 41500; Educational Amendments of 1972, Title IX.
  • Section 5: There shall be no hazing.

ARTICLE V: OFFICERS

  • Section 1:The officers of this organization will be a President, a Vice-President, a Secretary, and a Treasurer. The organization may have two positions filled by one person. Such officers may be eligible for reelection and advancement.
  • Section 2: Term of office shall be from the time of election or on another date specified at the time of their election and continue in office until their successors are duly elected and qualified
  • Section 3: In the event that any position becomes vacant in any of the offices, with the exception of the Presidency, the organization will fill these vacancies by means of special elections called by the highest ranking officer with the consent and agreement of all officers. Officers elected by means of a special election shall abide to ARTICLE IV, Section 2. In the event that the Presidency becomes vacant, the Vice-President shall fill this position.
  • Section 4: All officers of this organization are matriculated, currently enrolled students at San Jose Sate University.

ARTICLE VI: DUTIES OF OFFICERS

  • Section 1: It shall be the duty of the President to execute the orders and policies of the National Executive Council and the San Jose State University Chapter Council. The President shall also preside all meetings, name all special committees, appoints all committee chairs, make recommendations for the future development of the organization, and call all special elections.
    It is also the duty of the President to make an annual report to the National Executive Secretary concerning its activities, programs and membership during the preceding academic year. This report shall be forwarded to the National Executive Secretary not later than April 1 of that year.
  • Section 2: It shall be the duty of theVice-President to assist the President and to preside in his/her absence.
  • Section 3: It shall be the duty of the Secretary to record the minutes of all meetings, maintain accurate records of all business pertaining to the organization, and to receive and respond to all official correspondence.
  • Section 4: It shall be the duty of the Treasurer to collect and distribute all funds as directed by the organization and to make monthly finance reports to the general membership.

ARTICLE VII: NOMINATIONS AND ELECTIONS

  • Section 1: Nominations for office shall be made from the floor (i.e. any active member shall make a nomination for office). Nominations shall take place no latter than two weeks before elections are to be hold.
  • Section 2: Elections shall take place no later than the 1st week of the last month of the academic year.
  • Section 3:In the event that only two to three people are running for the same office, officers shall be elected by a plurality vote in which one candidate must get more votes than anyone else.
    In the vent that four or more people are running for the same office, there shall be a "primary election" in which the two candidates with the most votes (plurality vote) are selected to participate in a "secondary election". In the "secondary election" officers shall be elected by a majority vote in which a candidate must receive one more than half (50% + 1) of all votes cast.

ARTICLE VIII: MEETINGS

  • Section 1: A regular meetings shall be held at least once a month for the purpose of updating members about the direction the organization is taking during the year.
  • Section 2: Any special meeting shall be called for by the President, the Faculty Advisor to the organization, or majority of membership. Any member of the organization has the right to point out the need for a special meeting.
  • Section 3: A quorum of 25% of the total membership must be present at a meeting in order for business to be conducted).
  • Section 4: The parliamentary authority for the organization shall be Robert's Rules of Order, Revised.

ARTICLE IX: COMMITTEES

  • Section 1: The authority to name committees and committee chairpersons shall reside on the President and/or the Faculty Advisor.
    There shall be a standing committee called - The Membership Committee. This committee shall be headed by the Faculty Advisor and its members shall include the President and one student member of the organization. This committee shall evaluate membership requirements.

ARTICLE X: DUES AND FEES

  • Section 1: A person shall become a member upon receipt by the Chapter's Office of his/hers payment of the initiation fee of $40 and not before such action. This fee shall constitute a life membership fee and no national dues, fees or other assessments shall hereafter be imposed.

ARTICLE XI: AMENDMENTS

  • Section 1: An amendment can be originated by any member of the organization but shall be presented by the Faculty Advisor.
  • Section 2: Presenting an amendment to the organization for voting purposes, shall be done by the Faculty Advisor. The amendment must be presented to the organization body at least two times preceding the vote. The amendment shall be posted for at least one week in advance for all members to read.
  • Section 3: An amendment shall only be adopted when two thirds of the organization's members agree to it. All members must vote on each amendment. The process for voting on an amendment to the constitution shall take place at a special meeting. Any member that does not participate on the special meeting has the right to present his/her vote in the form of a letter. This letter must be received one day before the special meeting.
  • Section 4: Amendments shall become effective a month after voting has taken place or at a specific date agreed upon during the special meeting.
