The company was incorporated under the Company's Ordinance 1940-1946 on November 9, 1961 under the name of SHARIKAT JAYA RAYA LIMITED. Subsequently, with the enforcement of the Company's Act 1965, the company was deemed to have changed its name to SHARIKAT JAYA RAYA BERHAD, as a Company limited by Shares. On 5 August 1988, the company was converted from a Public Limited Company to a Private Limited Company and changed its name to SYARIKAT JAYA RAYA SDN BHD (SJR).

Since then SJR has evolved into a diversified group of companies with business activities ranging from trading and manufacturing to energy and project management. SJR, as the parent company, remains mainly as an investment holding company. Jaya Raya Group is an original Malaysian success story, having grown from a modest saw milling operation into one of the country's established privately-owned Bumiputra companies.
