Briefly, I was brought to Australia for several months in 1977 to be a discussant at a symposium on trade in Oceania. Since I knew about Mesoamerican trade, but nothing about Oceania, I was brought over a couple of months early to bone up. Of course, the archaeologists didn't count on my "garbage" agenda, but were good sports when they discovered it -- in fact, when I arrived in Canberra, three archaeologists met my plane in tattered tuxcedos and hats and took me with reporters and film crews out to the Pialego [sp?] Tip. I talked to a number of communities and companies -- and in the early '80s they paid for my Co-Director and I to fly over a give a series of talks -- but in those days "garbage" wasn't a crisis, and we would have been expensive. Ah, well. In the early '90s I was invited to give the keynote address at the big Garbage Expo in Melbourne [I don't remember the exact name of the meeting]. Nothing since in the line of garbage.
