From Ron Bowen, Auckland New Zealand December 2000.
Edith: Edith Bowen(nee Johnston) migrated from Mildura, Australia in the EARLY 1900's (between 1905 and 1908) with her 2 sons Austin Montague and Cyril Douglas and husband Wiliam Bowen.
Edith: in Jan 1908 a daughter Nancy Elvena was born.
Edith: The move to Belmont, Auckland was for William to find a climate that was more suited to his recovery from a snake bite incurred in Mildura. William died in 1925 in Auckland Hospital.
Edith: During the family stay at Belmont, Auckland NZ, they resided at School rd where the boys attended the local school (adjacent to the house) and where Edith made and sold sweets to the local children from a small shop in the front of the house.... "there were no shops at all at Belmont except for one small store in the front of the Bowen's house beside the main school gates and tram stop. At Bowen's we children bought comics and lollies with our pocket money of a penny."...from'Belmont. Hall and Gasworks' by Jean Bartlett published as part of the history of "Takapuna, people and Places, Takapuna City Council and North Shore Historical Society 1989".Printed by Arrow Press Morrinsville.
Edith: From Belmont, young Cyril would catch the tram to Milford township where the family eventually moved to set up a small store on the waterfront of Milford beach (before the Pirratte Ship was built) hiring out canoes and bathing costumes and selling sweets etc.
Edith: From Milford the family split up, Cyril married, Austin went to Nelson, and eventually Edith moved to a modest bungalow on beach rd Mairangi Bay.
This location is my earliest recollection of Edith and the long summer days at the nearby beach, often with my uncle Austin Montague Bowen.124 F v Bessie Bowen was christened 1 on 9 Jan 1857 in Wigmore, Herefordshire, England.
