The deceased gentleman had for several months past been in failing health though he had been for a short time only prevented from taking his usual active part in the management of the Hereford Poor Law Union and other public business to which he had devoted much time and attention. 10 years ago he was presented at the Green Dragon Hotel with a handsome service of plate. He was County Magistrate and a Commissioner of the Hereford Turnpike Trust. He was also very much to do with field sports, particularly hunting and he presented at many Hunt Dinners and was a popular speech maker at dinners given by Sir Velters Cornewall and Mr. Arkwright of Hampton Court. In the more retired sphere of a country gentleman Mr. Freeman was beloved by a large circle of friends and neighbours. In brief Mr. Freeman was in every relation of life a man of sterling character and was a thoroughly fine example of a country gentleman.

4. Hi Steve, I sent you the appended on 16th. Feb. Hope it gets through this time Don Maddox
Hi Stephen, Your posting arrived in my In Tray by a circuitous route ! But arrive it did. I may be able to answer some of your questions. I live in Letton and the Freeman/Blisset/Dew families have, over the last 15 years, taken more of my time than they should have. Marrying cousins seems to have been a fashion, or at least a family trait. One of John Freeman's sons in law, Revd. John Lilley, was also a cousin of his. That's 'by the way'. Henry Blisset was certainly alive in 1881 and with the two children, John Freeman B. and Margaret Jane B.. Henry's wife Jamima (sic) died in 1877. Between 1860 & 70 Henry had a burst of energy and expenditure of money. (They were very rich. The Freemans had made their money in the slave trade, which combined well with the brass and copper of the Blissets). He demolished Letton Court, had a new one built, erected new estate offices, stabling and coach houses (all still standing except his court which burned down in the 1920s and was replaced with the present one) and a new Rectory. All this expressed a confidence in the future. Life is full of paradoxes because John Freeman Blisset, a Doctorate from Oxford, a J.P and deputy Lieutenant for Hereford County, died, unmarried on 24th. April 1880. That must have been a blow to Henry, his son and heir shuffling off this mortal coil. He still had Margaret Jane as heiress. She, some years later, eloped with Tom Dew, Henry's farm bailif. This must have been a bitter blow. I have the feeling he became quite bitter himself after this. When he died there were only four mourners at his funeral and Margaret Jane wasn't one of them. Instead of being buried in the Freeman/Blisset vault in the church, Henry is buried in a corner of the churchyard with Jamima and John Freeman. We've recently had his tombstone repaired and renovated Margaret Jane did inherit a stripped down estate - Henry had sold off a lot of it to stop Tom Dew getting his hands on it. Her (childless) marriage lasted about seven years before she died of a disecting aneurism of the aorta. Tom married her nurse. He died in 1931 and his (again childless) widow in 1960. The estate was then sold to the present owner. Hope this helps. With best wishes, Don Maddox <[email protected]>
