2. Hi Steve,
I received your e-mail and will try to answer as many of your questions as possible. This will be rather complicated and I will try to keep it as short and concise as possible.
First...I am not sure how much you may know about "Home Children".
Literally thousands of young children were sent from England to Canada and Australia over the years by foundling homes in England. Some of these children were orphans, some were from destitute families and some were just "taken" without their parents consent because the foundling homes needed to fill their quotas. They were sent out as farm labour on Canadian farms.
In 1879, three little sisters--Clara age 11, Emily Sarah age 7, and Anne Amelia age 3, DERRY were "taken" by the Middlemore Home in Birmingham, England and were sent on the ship SS Moravian and arrived in Quebec on June 21, 1879 with a party of fifty five other English children.
The three sisters were immediately separated and placed in rural homes in Ontario. This was the Middlemore Homes policy and the girls never learned where their sisters had gone.
This is how the three Derry children came to be in Canada and as far as I know the rest of the family remained in England.
Looking into some of the Middlemore records that we have been "permitted" to see we are somewhat suspicious of how these three were taken from their parents, but that is another story.
Next.......I have the marriage certificate of the marriage of their parents.
Reads as follows.........
Marriage solemnized at St. Stephens Church Birmingham.
May 22, 1866
Henry William Derry 21, bachelor, gun percussionist filer, Res. Lionel Street, Birmingham.
his father...Henry Badham Derry, iron monger (no adders given on certificate for Henry Badham)
Sarah Rose, 22, no occupation, spinster, res. Lionel Street,
her father Joseph Rose, occupation -smith ( no address given on certificate for Joseph)
Witness William Hill and Emma Arnold
Note: an interesting thing about this certificate is the actual signature of Harry William Derry, he first wrote Harry and then crossed out Harry and wrote Henry instead. Sarah could not write and signed her X.
Note Henry/Harry and Sarah Derry should show up on the 1871 census for Birmingham and possibly little Clara if she was born around 1868.
Next....I have the birth certificate for Emily Sarah Derry
Born 29, January,1873 at Nelson Street,West, Birmingham.
Father....Harry William Derry, Mother Sarah Derry ,formerly Rose.
The Derrys were living at #4 Sheepcote Street, Birmingham
Next....I have the birth certificate for Annie Amelia Derry
Born July 7, 1876 in the workhouse on Dudley Road.
Father- Henry Derry....Mother - Sarah Derry formerly Rose.
Res. given as Workhouse on Dudley Road
(it appears that the father goes by both Harry and Henry)
I have not been able to locate a birth certificate for Clara Derry, and I think she was born elsewhere than Birmingham. I have found four or five possibles, but as these certificates cost $30.00 plus postage and money orders, I hesitate sending until I an more certain that I have the right Clara.
I cant be sure of her date of birth as Middlemores said she was eleven in 1879 and they were out a couple of years on the other two girls ages.
The girls will not show up on the 1881 census for Birmingham as they were in Canada at that time. I have found all three in different locations in Ontario on the Canada 1881 census.
Hope this helps some . I feel quite sure that the Henry Badham Derry is one and the same.
Please keep in touch...............Mary in Lethbridge
