36. Richard Woodyatt
1Geoffrey Maurice Smart, G.M.Smart Correspondence to Stephen Jorgensen Kelsey (Unpublished), 20 Aug 1968, Stephen Jorgensen Kelsey, 5368 Cottonwood Club Drive, Salt Lake City,Utah 84117. This correspondence covers the period from July of 1968 to 1975. "Richard escaped early from the hard life which his father, Richard is said to have led him. The father held an appointment for some years on a farm in France, later taking Pixham Farm with a brother[all brothers were dead by then so this could be brother in law or other relatives], and suffered heavy loss by standing security for a ne'er-do-well relative. (From Miss Blanche Woodyatt's letter to Mrs. Withers). Edith(Gwyn) told her that Richard always took his wife abroad each winter as she was delicate and he devoted to her. Their 2nd. son William [records indicate he was their 1st son] was born in France. When these 2 sons were quite young she died, and it was after this that her husband "went to pieces," squandered his money and lost all. He stood surety for a bamgling relative who defaulted and went abroad. Richard (according to Malvern Gazette 27 Jan. 1905) was born @Cowleigh Park Farm, occupied by his father, Richard, The father later went to France to an appointment on an estate and several children junior to Richard were born there[there are no records to support other children born in France except the eldest, William]. The death of his employer brought him back to England, and with another brother[his brothers were all dead at this time so it must have been a brother in law or other relative] he became tenant of Pixham Farm. Pixham was then much more important, there being a wharf at the Ferry and a large trade by river between the district and Worcester. (The cutting follows the story above the father's financial loss) . . and the family had to strike out and earn their own livings. Son Richard spent some time with his uncle "Squire" Cliff, a West Malvern sportsman who ran his own pack of harriers, before starting to cater for the visitors' summer trade in the newly-opened Spa, with one horse and a carriage. In the winters he hauled materials from Worcester for the construction of the Malvern Wells railway tunnel. When he retired in 1898 to Tintern Lodge he had the chief carriage business in Malvern, which his children, William & Bertha (W.& B.) then carried on. He had a 70 acre farm at Leigh in 1878, adding 170 acres in 1881 and moving in 1896 to Blackmore Farm."
