Candidate quiz on existing knowledge of North America and the USA in particular and or video. Historical development including colonialism and immigration patterns; environmental factors including physical and human geography; socia-cultural variables including, political structure, capitalism and commercialism, discriminated minorities. Candidate comments on differences in the UK.

Hello Harry and Tom. I hope you have both been able to access this site! Two h/ws included here. H/w to be done before Wednesday 6th September is the first set out below. H/w to be handed in on Tuesday 12th September is below that.
First h/w:
Read Chap 15 in the Davis et al text book. Read only what is said about the USA. Then make notes under the following headings (your notes should not be more than two sides in total - so choose CAREFULLY what you write):
Historical developments including colonialism and immigration patterns. How has this affected the sports played in the USA?
Environmental factors including physical and human geography. How does this affect the sports played in the USA?
Socio-cultural variables including:
+ political structure;
+ capitalism and commercialism;
+ discriminated minorities (race, gender, age, etc.).
(Always include the effect on the sports played in the USA)
There will be a short test at the beginning on Wednesday 6th! Good luck!
Below is the h/w to be handed in on Tuesday 12th September:
1) Use your lesson notes / handouts and your Davis et al text book to fill in the five sections of the sheet titled: �Socio-economic influences on physical education and sport in the US�. Be brief and only include bullet points which are relevant to the title (ie. what influences PE and Sport in America. An example, Finance: capitalist economy, where the market rules � the American Dream of �rags to riches�, especially epitomised by the Rocky stories).
2) Answer the following questions using your text book (again be brief, 6 � 7 lines for each question):
a) Explain the significance of the frontier spirit in the USA in the context of the Wilderness.
b) Compare links between the size of the country, communications and sport in the USA.
c) The development of sport in the USA reflects a nation adapting games to meet its cultural needs. Discuss.
d) How has the USA used sport to help establish a national identity?
e) Briefly describe the impact of capitalism on sport in the USA.
3) Now I would like you to do a bit of prep for next week. All you need to do is read about: USA, Physical Education in Schools (Davis et al text book).
Questions to discuss at a latter date (perhaps you may want to keep this in mind??):
1) Explain the motion of �shop window� and sport in the USA.
2) How has a market economy determined the funding of sport in the USA?
3) Racial stratification still exists in the USA. Compare the chance of reaching the top in sport with obtaining a top career.
4) Discuss the exploitation of young sports stars in the United States.
