CRATE   <    <   <   This is maybe the simgle most important thing you buy.  I use wire because it's portable.  Some people use plastic because it's easier to clean.  Whatever works for you, go for it - but ALWAYS buy a crate!  You can line it with old towels and blankets, which is much cheaper than spending lots of money on fancy crate liners.  I also cover my wire crate with a blanket to insulate and keep my dog calm.
VITTLES VAULT <   <   <   Seriously, this canister is worth its weight in gold.  It seals the dog food away from pests, as well as renders it impossible for the dog to get into the food stores and eat uncontrollably.  It's portable, it's classy looking, it's safe!
FLEXI LEAD <   <   <   I know it's a faux pas for me to recommend this, but I've found it to be a lifesaver - especially since I don't have a fenced yard.  I use it at dog shows (when exercising the dog), I use it for hiking, I use it on those freezing days when Ilsa has to relieve herself and it's too cold to follow her outside...  I like the all-belt kind.  I have a Flexi Pro - it has a 26' belt and an open casing.  I have a Flexi Friend (a safety hand loop) and a deerskin slip collar with the flexi so I'm never ill-prepared.
POO POO PICKUP <   <   <   There are two essential tools in your arsenal to battle poop... the first is a good supply of plastic bags.  I buy the Boots & Barkley brand at Target - they are scented black bags that are inexpensive and well made.  The second tool is an Allen's Spring Action Grass Scoop.  I use the old fashioned rake and shovel at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital - they're bulky and hard to control.  The Allen's scoop is the best I've seen, and I recommend it highly.
LEATHER LEASH <   <   <   Don't buy a nylon leash!  Period!  End of story!  Leather leashes are stronger, prettier, more durable, more flexible, less smelly, won't burn your hands, etc.  When you buy leather, you need to buy quality.  See my "Favorite Websites" page for great places online to but quality leather leashes.
LUPINE MARTINGALE COLLAR <   <   <   These babies come with a lifetime guarantee.  They are strong, well made, and beautiful.  They are my favorite martingale collar, and every one of my dogs will have one.
METAL MARTINGALE <   <   <   Made only by Herm Sprenger, these gorgeous collars are super strong and stunning.  This is what I use to train with - it's amazing.
ID TAGS <   <   <   Essential!  It is imperative that your dog have an ID tag with the dog's name and your phone number (including area code) attached to the collar.  Microchipping and tatooing is a more permanent means of identification, but tags are just as important.
STAINLESS STEEL BOWLS <   <   <   These are the safest bowls made.  The don't chip or crack like ceramic bowls, and the don't cause allergic reactions like plastic bowls.  They are easy to sterilize and ecomonical.
TOYS <   <   <   Come on people, you know what dog toys are!  Buy lots!  Balls, rope bones, kongs, frisbees, plushies, squeaky toys... I could go on and on.  Just be sure to watch for signs of damage, and throw a toy away when it gets worn out.
COATS & BOOTIES <   <   <   For short coated dogs, these items are essential.  I like FidoFleece coats and fleece booties.  FidoFleece coats can be found on sale in places you wouldn't expect - I got both of mine at the local feed store for less than $20.
NATURE'S MIRACLE <   <   <   This stuff is worth its weight in gold.  It cleans up any organic stain, and smells nice.  It's an enzymatic cleaner so it eliminates the odor - doesn't just cover it up.  Buy the gallon size... you'll need it.
GROOMING SUPPLIES <   <   <   Short coated dogs need shampoo, conditioner, finishing spray, a rubber brush, and a polishing brush.  Other coats need different or additional supplies, but there are too many products to list here.  All dogs need a toothbrush, canine toothpaste, a dremel, ear cleaning solution, and styptic powder.
AUTOMOBILE RESTRAINT <   <   <   All dogs need to be restrained in automobiles.  Plastic crates and Roadie RuffRider seatbelts are my personal favorites.
MUZZLE <   <   <   I don't care if Fluffy is the sweetest dog in the world - EVERY dog needs a muzzle for emergencies.  I use inexpensive greyhound kennel muzzles, but nylon muzzles work just as well.
And remember... you can NEVER have too much dog stuff!
