I have just completed an article for a central Texas Historical Society on Major Robert White, the first Major of the 6th and its most important to die in combat. Robert White was destined for greatness. He was dearing and inventive, thus trusted with difficult intelligence task such as deep reconnissance and in leading troops in combat as he did as a Ranger before the war and continued till his death on the Duck Island of the Tennessee River in April of 1863. During that combat he was the only one killed. A single bullet struck him down and he died within a few hours. My kin has two notations in his files that he was on detached duty with Major White. I like to think he was with Newton Keen when Major White died. Keen wrote in his book that White was right beside him in the battle and they carried him away from the battle where he died in the evening. In my heart I see him there.
The Sixth Texas was full of heros, many who died young and many who went on to greatness. The important cause of remembering these Texans lies with the few who remember their kin and the very few who believe in the true word in remembering history.
The history revisionist who continue to change the written word so that their cause or way is the norm, are from those that caused the Civil War in the first place. Their need to change the direction from freedom for all to control by a few is an onward march of mankind. It may be the opposit of freedom.
Elections bring out this vain in me. The constand battle of liberal vs conservative, bad vs good, yin vs yang is evident when we battle for a just society. I keep hearing that a true democracy can not endure. It dies from the liberal bleading it from the inside until it collapses from the loss of money to continue. I am not a deep thinker in this. Much of what I say is paroted from others, but my anger is real and my desire to do battle is still found in my heart.
