Answer to Who Is It 6 . . .

Daniel Harvey Hill
------------------

1821-1889

General Daniel Harvey Hill was born July 12, 1821 in York District,
South Carolina. Hill attended the U.S. Military Academy at West Point
in 1842. Hill saw his first combat in the Civil War winning the
Battle of Big Bethel. Hill was promoted to Brigadier-General the day
of that victory. General Hill was promoted to Major-General on March
26, 1862 and served under General Joseph Johnston at the Battle of
Yorktown, Williamsburg, and Seven Pines. General Hill then served
under the command of General Robert E. Lee at the Seven Days Battle
and the Battles of Second Bull Run, South Mountain, and Antietam.
General Hill was also put in charge of the District of North Carolina
for a brieftime.

On July 11, 1863 General Hill was promoted to Lieutenant-General and
was assigned a command in the Army of Tennessee under General Braxton
Bragg. Hill would fight at the Battle of Chickamauga, and was given
the deserved credit of defeating Union General William Rosecrans.
After the battle General Bragg and General Hill had disagreements
about not pursuing the defeated Union forces. But because Bragg was a
Full-General and Hill was only a Lieutenant-General Bragg's decision
stood, and because of Hill's disagreement with Bragg, Hill's rank of
Lieutenant-General was withdrawn. General Hill would never hold
another command throughout the war, and saw brief action at the
Battle of Petersburg in 1864 and in 1865 in the Battle of
Bentonville. Lieutenant-General Daniel Harvey Hill died on September
24,1889 in Charlotte, North Carolina.
