You're trying to manage your party efficiently, but everybody keeps picking fights with each other. You want to know if you should keep a certain character, when there might be someone better just across the street. Or, say your Mage died, and you need to know where to find a replacement. Click the link for the specs on all the recruitable NPCs in BG1, or take this link to the potential party members in BG2. Both lists are spoiler-unfriendly: Each page contains a blank table, which you can print out and fill in with a pencil as you find each NPC. Or, you can 'select' the table to reveal the invisible text and show the information. For each game, I've listed the NPCs in approximately the order you will be able to recruit them into your party: Don't make plans for a character waaaaay down the list, unless you know you can actually get that character relatively quickly. Note that the NPCs may be slightly different in different games: Their level, hitpoints, equipment, and weapon proficiencies may change a bit. That's because there's actually more than 1 version of each NPC: At the moment each character joins your party, the game checks the list of "incarnations" of that NPC, and picks the one that most closely matches the Player Character's Level. This ensures a more balanced game, so you don't have a Level 7 PC directing a band of Level 3 characters, or vice versa. (One side effect of this is that you'll usually want to grab your 5 "ideal" party members as quickly as possible, before they put their Weapon Proficiencies and Thieving Skills into something that you don't want.)

In BG1, there are 30 NPCs who can join your party; BG2 and ToB together only provide 17. What's even more constrictive about BG2 is that there are only 3 NPCs of Evil alignment (plus one more in Throne of Bhaal), and there are only 2 Thieves who can gain levels, and neither of those Thieves are Evil. Now you see why so many people write MODs to include more recruitable NPCs in BG2. Because of the Thief shortage, you might want to consider making a PC who is part Thief, and/or going quasi-Multiplayer and creating a second PC to be a Thief.
