Many years ago, I was introduced to scanner monitoring by an uncle of mine and have continued ever since. Scanning is a great hobby. You have a front seat to ALL the action, be it police, fire, EMS, local government, aircraft and much more.
It does not have to be expensive to get started. Many
radios are available for under $100.00 and are of good quality and cover
the most popular bands. Slightly more expensive radios cover more bands
and have more features such as more channels, and the newer ones are able
to track the "trunking" radio systems that many area Public Safety agencies
are switching to as well as Hamilton County Communications.

The city of Cincinnati is currently constructing their system,
which should be on-line in 2005. This system is still in the analog mode and can
be received with the current crop of trunktracking scanners. However, once this
system is fully operational it too will be a 9600 baud system to be compatible
with Hamilton County's system.
There are many websites that are devoted to the scanning
hobby and are geared to the Tri-State area. You can check these out:
MONIXWeb This page cover the Cincinnati-Dayton area and has codes & signals for several agencies. It also covers the area's 800 MHz trunked radio systems.
MONIX This page contains the tri-state's most comprehensive frequency list and other links of interest. It is a companion site to the original MONIX page.
Kentucky Ohio Indiana Tri-State Scanner Page Covering the tri-state area as well as some not so local agencies.
All Ohio Scanner Club A club devoted strictly to scanner monitoring. Also covers several nearby states. VERY GOOD newsletter.
Radio Reference.com THE premier reference point for any & all information on trunked radio system and county-specific radio information.
