Excerpt from May 2007 email from Chris (currently serving our great country at war)...
"Just know that there are lots of Army
(USA) folk, a few AF, and my team of 10 Navy personnel (with a few
other Navy Corpsmen and IT-types to boot) here, and my job as garrison
commander is to keep the FOB (Forward Operating Base) running. Kind
of like being in charge of a resort, except we are surrounded by large
walls, there is no pool, and most notably no alcohol. My other
responsibility is to mentor my ANA counterpart in running his own
garrison, which is about 1 klick (kilometer) from here. Dealing with
the dust, corruption, and constant risk of being rocketed is going to
make this an interesting year.
Just to keep things in perspective, this is a safe, well-guarded
place. The Army is good at what they do and extremely professional.
Finally, I will get my first taste of security this afternoon when I
have to man one of the guard towers for a few hours. I'll keep you
posted as to how that goes." |
