Kim's Triplet Pregnancy Journal - 1st Trimester
(May 2001 - July 2001)
At first we thought it was just a regular singleton pregnancy (for about a week and a half). I was having some pain and swelling in my abdomen, so an early ultrasound (u/s) at 5 weeks showed the possibility of twins. Another week later, a follow-up u/s showed three sacks!
Less than a week after learning there were three, I suffered a hemorrhage. Everyone thought I was having a miscarriage due to the amount of blood and clots. The next day in the doctor’s office another u/s was performed and faint heartbeats in each sack were seen for the first time. You have no idea how relieved we were. Poor daddy was not allowed to be with me for the u/s so he was in the waiting room for more than a half hour thinking I had a miscarriage. What a surprise and great relief when I came in smiling and showing him “photos” of our little trio.
After the hemorrhage, I had to be on restricted activities so no further complications would arise, so for a week after the hemorrhage I was on modified bed rest. We had to cancel our vacation to Wyoming due to the distance. What a bummer. We were planning this trip for more than a year.
I decided not to use the same OB-GYN practice that delivered Elizabeth. So because this was a multiple pregnancy and I had some problems with my pregnancy with Liz, we decided to go to the Maternal Fetal Management (MFM) group at Magee Women’s Hospital in Pittsburgh. They specialize in high risk pregnancies and have dealt with a lot of multiple births. My first appointment with them was at 8 weeks. The head doctor I did not care for at all! He was so cold and clinical. His bedside charm stinks. I had so many fears and questions (mostly fears). All he told me was “You’re pregnant, what’d you expect?” when I asked about the cramping and pelvic pain I was having. Luckily I didn’t have to deal with him too much throughout the rest of the pregnancy.
It took close to 8 weeks for the bleeding and spotting to completely stop. The cramping stopped around 12 -14 weeks. This whole time I was a complete worry wart.
First time we saw movement was at 10 weeks during a routine u/s in the office for a regular check-up. Made me feel 1000 times better to see movement. My attitude got a little bit more positive after this. So far my blood work is perfect, my blood pressure is normal and so is my blood sugar levels. WOW. At 11 weeks we had to go buy some maternity cloths for me. With Liz, I never had to wear any till winter, so I had 1 short sleeve shirt. It’s only mid-late June now. I look pregnant now (not just fat).
My first few months/weeks I haven’t had much of an appetite at all. I don’t get sick, but I just have no desire to eat anything. I started craving mashed potatoes around week 11.
Started to discuss baby names. We don’t think we’ll need 3 names of each sex. Boy name #1 will be Charles Timothy Jr.. Daddy always wanted a Junior so there was no discussion on that. 2nd boy name we like is Andrew. (That’s daddy’s “extra” name that granny gave him). Middle name for Andrew would be either William or Lewis. Probably Lewis. Daddy had been talking about Clyde for a name. (It’s my grandfather’s name) He really wants a Clyde. I don’t see me having a son named Clyde though. If we end up having 3 boys, I’ll have to think of another name, but for now I’ll let daddy dream of Clyde. We both agree on a girl’s name. Daddy picked it out – Erin Marie. Surprisingly I liked it. We can’t agree on another girls name and that’s good because daddy said if we have more than 1 girl he is moving out of the house!
