No herbicides are used: Weeds are controled through cultivation (tilling, hoeing, and plain old PULLING). Growing vegetables using organic methods is Labor Intensive.
No chemical pesticides are used: Insects and disease are controlled by growing healthy plants in healthy soil. Crops are rotated every year; Insects get confused not finding their 'dinner' in the same place twice.
Fertile soil is accomplished by adding compost, wood ashes, calcium, sawdust, fish emulsion, and manure.
Taste: In addition to being "chemical-free", the varieties we choose to grow are based first and foremost on flavor, not size or shipping quality. We'd rather eat three medium-sized tomatoes bursting with flavor, than an over-grown, tastless one. Wouldn't you?? |
