A world heritage site to be sure, though not as awe inspiring as say the Pyramids or Machu Pichu, Angkor Wat is very much one of the hidden jewels of South East Asia. Well preserved and unique in architectural style, Angkor Wat stands out as a huge metropolis that arguably was one of largest cities in the world during its peak (12th Century) Covering an area the size of Los Angeles, Cambodians were able to construct a massive system of roads and temples within Angkor town, with Angkor Wat at its center. Population estimates at the time range from 80 to 150 thousand and between the 11th and 13th centuries, historians suggest that Angkor was the capital to over a million people (thats 3x larger than the largest city in Europe at the time)
Angkor What?
Very Scenic and peaceful...rice growing on its own, water buffalos hanging about. Temples were in pretty good shape most of them anyway as you will see.
There were so many temples and ruin sites that it's hard to keep track of them all. These twin Buddha images are from a site dating back to the 13th century. The Angkor kings contributed much to the foundation of Cambodia's great architectural heritage from the 9th to the 14th centuries. Yasovarman I, who ruled Cambodia in the late 9th century, moved the capital from the border of Thailand to Angkor.
