Falumpaset - Loud and odious beasts with tough skin and hardy builds, falumpasets are found wandering the swamps and forests of Naboo. The native Gungans use the animals as beasts of burden. Falumpasets haul battle wagons and the catapults of the Gungan Grand Army into the battlefield, and Boss Nass uses a decorated falumpaset as a ceremonial transport. The herbivorous falumpaset roams the Naboo swamps in family groups consisting of one bull and four to seven cows and their young. Their long legs are perfect for wading into deep waters, and they are capable swimmers.
Two specially trained Gungan handlers are required to properly control a falumpaset. According to Gungan fables, such handlers aren't allowed to form close relationships with other beings lest the stubborn falumpasets grow jealous and even more ornery.
Mott - Motts are semi-aquatic herbivores that dwell in underground mudbank burrows. They are preyed upon by a wide variety of other beasts -- including the Gungans -- but their high reproductive rate keeps them surviving. These creatures are very good swimmers. Motts are small, stubby-legged quadrupeds that can sometimes be heard snuffling in the mudbanks and grasses of the Naboo swamps.
Nuna - Comical in their ungainly gait, nunas are flightless fowl native to the swamps of Naboo. The rounded two-legged "swamp turkeys" have short beaks, fatty waddles, and slow wits. A number of dwarf nunas have found their way to Tatooine and elsewhere, prospering as city pests. Nunas are often looked down upon as vermin. There are even team sporting events that use scrappy nunas in place of a ball. A vigorous omnivore, nunas feed mostly off swamp plants, though it will hunt down and feed on small amphibians. A capable runner, the nuna always flees when faced with danger. If trapped, the nuna will use its powerful legs to kick viciously in defense. The nuna's back is lined with scales but those provide little protection against the many predators who seek out the nuna for its tasty meat. Their high reproductive rate helps the nunas avoid extinction.
Peko-Peko - A shock of blue against the gray mists and green canopy of the Naboo swamps, the peko-peko is a long-tailed avian with a distinctive cry. Over two meters long from beak to tail, the peko-peko lives in the swamp forests, where it uses its clawed wings to make its way through the dense foliage when moving around in trees. Because of its short legs, the peko-peko cannot walk as gracefully as it flies. It has a powerful beak capable of breaking small branches and cracking open the shell of the toxic jute nut, the peko-peko's favorite food. The peko-peko's skin is toxic, and most predators leave it alone. Sentient hunters prey on the peko-peko to harvest the amazing anti-venin the animal secretes.
Peko-pekos are capable mimics, making them popular pets among the Gungans and the Naboo.
Peko-peko couples are formed for life, and each couple lives in its private area, removed from the others. According to Naboo folklore, the rare sight of more than two peko-pekos flying together is a good omen.
Characters
Battle Droid - While critics would be quick to point out a battle droid's mindlessness as a fault, the proponents of the mechanized soldiers would counter that it is instead a virtue. A mindless soldier is a loyal soldier, unquestioning of orders, easily controlled, and absolutely fearless. It was the invasion of Naboo by the Trade Federation that showed the galaxy not only the effectiveness of battle droids, but also the glaring oversights in their design. Against a peaceful populace, the Trade Federation army of battle droids was able to quickly conquer and take control of the Naboo population centers. These droids would blindly obey orders spoken to them by their commanders or transmitted to them from an orbital Droid Control ship. The efforts of Bravo Squadron, and Anakin Skywalker in particular, destroyed the Droid Control Ship, thereby rendering the army useless.
Battle droids are tall, gaunt humanoids with exposed joints and bone-white metal finishes that gives them an eerie resemblance to animated skeletons. Battle droid infantry is frightening in its uniformity -- only a numerical marking on the back of a comlink booster pack serves to distinguish one droid from another.
Droids with specialized functions have distinct colored markings on their armor. Blue denotes pilot droids. Red denotes security droids. Yellow denotes command droids, which function with increased autonomy compared to the standard infantry.
Battle droids are very efficient. Their humanoid builds allow them to operate machinery and pilot a wide variety of war craft designed for organic pilots. For the Trade Federation, the battle droid infantry piloted STAPs, MTTs, and AATs as well as their colossal battleships. For ease of storage and transportation, battle droids could compress into less than half their size.
Following the Naboo debacle, the Galactic Republic enacted strict legislation that prohibited the use of battle droid armies. The Trade Federation has shown its disrespect for Republic law in the past, and for years, many feared that the numerous foundries scattered throughout the galaxy were still churning out assembly lines of tireless soldiers.
Chancellor Valorum - One of the last Supreme Chancellors to hold that office before the Galactic Republic crumbled to make way for an oppressive Empire, Valorum was a well-meaning but ill-fated politician. When the Trade Federation blockaded the peaceful system of Naboo, Valorum circumvented bureaucratic procedure by dispatching a secret mission of Jedi ambassadors to negotiate an end to the crisis.
The negotiations failed as the Trade Federation attacked the ambassadors before talks could even begin. Queen Amidala of the Naboo voyaged to Coruscant to present her case to the assembled Senate. Valorum was genuinely pleased to see the Queen alive, but he was of no help in the Senate hall, where he had to abide by the proper bureaucratic measures.
The Trade Federation was quick to stall any of Amidala's claims of invasion by demanding a commission be appointed to investigate the accusation. Frustrated by lack of common sense or interest in what was just, Amidala lambasted the assembled politicians for their ineffective rule. She singled out Valorum specifically, on the advice of Palpatine, for his inability to take decisive action. She called for a Vote of No Confidence in Valorum's rule. The vote was soon seconded, and the political backlash cascaded throughout the rotunda. By the end of the session, Valorum was voted out of office, with no greater crime on his head than being bound by procedure and subjected to baseless accusations. Little did the Republic realize what they had in store by voting Palpatine to succeed him.
Jar Jar Binks - Long before galactic strife enveloped his native Naboo, Jar Jar Binks was exiled from the underwater city of Otoh Gunga. His main sin: being clumsy in front of the head of his clan. To hear Jar Jar tell it in his Gungan/Basic pidgin, he "boomed da gasser, and crashed de boss's heyblibber, den banished."
An outcast, the Gungan spent his time in the Naboo swampland, surviving on raw shellfish or just about anything else that the murky ecosystem had to offer. Jar Jar's fate took a twist when the hapless Gungan encountered a pair of Jedi as they eluded enemy forces during the Trade Federation invasion of Naboo.
By Gungan tradition, Jar Jar found himself indebted to Qui-Gon Jinn for saving his life. Jar Jar guided the Jedi to the underwater city of Otoh Gunga, where they secured transport to the Naboo capital of Theed. Jar Jar braved the "nocombackie law" to present Qui-Gon to the Gungan leader, Boss Nass, even though he risked the consequence of being "pounded" to death.
Throughout the adventure of liberating Naboo, Jar Jar tagged along with Qui-Gon. Although his bungling, haphazard mannerisms constantly landed him in hot water, his good nature and loyalty somehow helped him triumph in the end.
Queen Amidala requested that Jar Jar make contact with the Gungans. With Jar Jar's help, the Naboo and the Gungans forged an alliance that liberated the besieged world of Naboo. During the ground battle against the mechanized armies of the Trade Federation, Jar Jar was made a general in the Gungan Grand Army. After the battle, Jar Jar continued to ascend in Gungan society, putting his awkward past as an outcast behind him.
Master Yoda - Yoda, the ancient and revered Jedi Master, lived his final years hiding on the swamp planet of Dagobah. Nine hundred years old, Yoda had trained Jedi for eight centuries, and was very powerful in the Force. Among his last pupils were the most important (and reckless) Jedi in recent history, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Luke Skywalker.
In the waning days of the Republic, Yoda was a respected senior member of the Jedi Council. Serving alongside such luminaries as Mace Windu and Ki-Adi-Mundi, Yoda was present during the turbulent events that would eventually unravel the centuries-old Republic and seal the fate of the Jedi order.
Yoda served an important role in the Jedi Council. When young Padawans began their first foray into Jedi training, they did so under Yoda's guidance. Many of the Republic's greatest Jedi trained under Yoda when they were children. Once the Jedi hopefuls grew older, approaching their teenage years, they would then be paired to an elder Jedi Knight or Master to continue training one-on-one.
Obi-Wan Kenobi - A dedicated and legendary Jedi Knight, Obi-Wan Kenobi has had a long and tumultuous career that has helped shape the fate of an entire galaxy. When he was 25 standard years old, he was caught up in the important events of the Battle of Naboo. At the time he was a Padawan learner, apprenticed to Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn.
At the behest of Supreme Chancellor Valorum, Obi-Wan and his master secretly voyaged to Naboo to negotiate a peaceful settlement to the tense Trade Federation blockade of the planet. Aboard a Trade Federation vessel, the scheming Neimoidians sprung a trap on the Jedi, and attempted to kill them. Kenobi and his master escaped and stowed away on Trade Federation invasion craft landing on Naboo's surface.
Following his master, Obi-Wan voyaged from Naboo to Coruscant and back during the intrigue that surrounded the Battle of Naboo. When Qui-Gon Jinn brought a freed young slave boy, Anakin Skywalker, before the Jedi Council, Obi-Wan was taken aback. Qui-Gon claimed that Anakin was the Chosen One of an ancient Jedi prophecy, and that he was to be Jinn's new Padawan learner, replacing Obi-Wan. The council refused Jinn's proposal to train the boy.
This was just one of many disagreements that Obi-Wan Kenobi and Qui-Gon Jinn had during their time together. Jinn, a proponent of the living Force over the more serene unifying Force, had long been a maverick in the eyes of the Jedi Council. Obi-Wan implored his master not to go against the Council, but Qui-Gon always responded by saying that he must do as the will of the Force advises.
During the liberation of Naboo, Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan were challenged by a deadly Sith Lord. A forgotten menace, the Sith had returned after centuries of seeming extinction. For the first time in ages, Jedi and Sith dueled. The dark warrior, Darth Maul, used his incredible speed, rage and his double-ended lightsaber to
fend off both Jedi. As the duel progressed, Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon became separated. He watched helplessly as Maul killed Qui-Gon, and rushed to kill the Sith Lord in turn.
Qui-Gon's dying words were a request for Obi-Wan to train Anakin, despite the Council's objection. The Council ultimately agreed with Obi-Wan taking Anakin as a Padawan -- though Jedi Master Yoda had strong reservations about it. The Council also bestowed upon Obi-Wan the title and rank of Jedi Knight.
Officer Droid - The Officer Droids are higher ranking and much fewer than the Battle Droids. They have yellow on their heads and chests to distinguish them from the rest. They lead their platoons and are capable of giving orders.
Qui-Gon Jinn - A venerable if maverick Jedi Master, Qui-Gon Jinn is a student of the living Force. Unlike other Jedi Masters, who often lose themself in the meditation of the unifying Force, Qui-Gon Jinn lived for the moment, espousing a philosophy of "feel, don't think -- use your instincts." Were it not for Qui-Gon's unruly views, he would have undoubtedly been on the Jedi Council.
At the behest of Supreme Chancellor Valorum, Qui-Gon and his Padawan apprentice Obi-Wan Kenobi journeyed to Naboo to settle the trade dispute that threatened the peaceful world. Aboard a Trade Federation battleship, the Jedi were ambushed, but they managed to escape to Naboo's surface.
In the swamplands of Naboo, Qui-Gon rescued a clumsy Gungan outcast, Jar Jar Binks, who swore a life-debt to the Jedi. Qui-Gon's compassionate nature was such that he took the strange alien under his protection. With his help, they journeyed to the city of Theed. There, they freed Queen Amidala and her retinue from the clutches of the Trade Federation, and set off to deliver her safely to Coruscant.
During the trip to the capital, damaged sustained to the Royal Starship forced an unscheduled stop on the Outer Rim world of Tatooine. There, Qui-Gon discovered a young slave boy named Anakin Skywalker, who was strong in the Force. Sensing the boy's potential, Qui-Gon liberated Anakin from slavery. During their departure from Tatooine, Qui-Gon was nearly killed by a dark warrior, whom he suspected to be a Sith Lord.
The Jedi Master then traveled to Coruscant to present Anakin to the Jedi Council. The Council, however, felt Anakin's future seemed clouded and uncertain, and deemed the boy too old to begin training and dangerously full of fear and anger. They refused to allow Qui-Gon to train Anakin, but the Jedi Master nevertheless kept the boy as his ward as he returned to Naboo.
On Naboo, Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan confronted the Sith Lord Darth Maul, Qui-Gon's attacker from the desert. Maul proved a deadly and fearsome opponent. Together, Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon fended off the Sith Lord's attacks, but as the battle progressed, Master and apprentice became separated. Maul pressed his advantage, wearing down Qui-Gon's defenses and ultimately killing the Jedi Master. Obi-Wan then defeated Maul, but nothing could save Qui-Gon. With his last breath, the Jedi Master asked Obi-Wan to train Anakin, a request Kenobi accepted.
A short time later, the Jedi Master's body was cremated at a funeral attended by numerous mourners, including Anakin, Obi-Wan, Jar Jar, and several Jedi Council members.
Trade Federation - The Republic had enjoyed centuries of growth and prosperity; it was inevitable that its wealth would foster those with greed to match. The varied instruments of trade and commerce banded together into galaxy-spanning organizations meant to aggrandize their profits. Coalitions such as the Trade Federation, Commerce Guild, Techno Union, and the Intergalactic Banking Clan consolidated their individual markets under governing bodies of such size that they exhibited pull on the actions of the Galactic Senate.
The Trade Federation was a consortium of merchants and transportation providers that effectively controlled shipping throughout the galaxy. Under the rule of the scheming Neimoidians, it had attained enough clout to have full representation in the Galactic Senate, as if it were a member world. In order to rein in the Trade Federation, as well as raise funds for an overburdened government, the Republic approved the taxation of outlying trade routes.
Outraged, the Trade Federation brazenly blockaded the peaceful planet of Naboo in protest. Its fleet of massive battleships surrounded the pastoral world, cutting off direly needed supplies to the planet. The bold action caused great uproar in the Senate, marking yet another scandal in Chancellor Valorum's checkered career. Eager to resolve the dispute, he secretly dispatched a pair of Jedi ambassadors to Naboo to parley with the Neimoidians.
What no one in the galaxy knew was that the Trade Federation was but a pawn in a much larger game. The promise of a profitable outcome lured the Trade Federation's leaders -- Nute Gunray and Rune Haako -- into a partnership with a mysterious Sith benefactor. This shadowy Darth Sidious carefully manipulated the Senate, bogging the institute down in procedures while the Trade Federation tried to pressure Naboo's monarch into signing a treaty to legitimize the occupation.
Queen Amidala, Naboo's ruler, remained steadfast in her opposition. The normally cowardly Neimoidians then did the unexpected. Egged on by their Sith overlord, the Trade Federation began a full-scale invasion of Naboo.
While the budget-minded Trade Federation's reliance on droid labor was well known, the scope of their invasion army was shocking. Legions of automated infantry -- battle droids -- aboard modern war-craft charged down the vine-laced avenues of Naboo's cities. The subjugation was quick; Naboo's populace was ill prepared.
Gunray, Haako and even Sidious failed to foresee Amidala's bravery and fortitude. She escaped their clutches and called upon the native Gungans of Naboo to join with a growing resistance force. Together, the people of Naboo were able to overthrow their oppressors. Haako and Gunray were arrested. The Neimoidians, however, kept Darth Sidious' existence a secret.
Even after the Senate's reprimands for the Naboo incident, the Trade Federation nonetheless continued to operate, becoming all the more influential in the political chaos that would follow. Gunray avoided hard time for his transgressions, and even after four trials in the Supreme Court, still managed to hold onto his Viceroy title.
Vehicles
Battle Tank (AAT) - The marriage of repulsorlift and heavy armor has resulted in formidable floating tanks known as AATs. These assault tanks form the frontline of Trade Federation armored infantry divisions. A crew of battle droids drives the battle tank and operates the array of laser and projectile weaponry carried by the vehicle.
Landing Ship - Facilitating the illegal Trade Federation invasion of Naboo were fleets of terrifying landing ships that filled the skies of the peaceful world. With its huge wingspan and imposing boot-shaped loading ramp, the Trade Federation landing ship is a daunting sight. Once the immense vessels set down on the outlying forests and swamps of Naboo, they disgorged hundreds of AATs, MTTs, troop transports and battle droids into the wilderness.
Multi-Troop Transport (MTT) - A terrifying display of Trade Federation efficiency, the mammoth MTT (Multi-Troop Transport) is an armored giant capable of disgorging over a hundred battle droid soldiers into the thick of combat. The vehicle's bulbous armored front end opens to reveal an articulated deployment rack, upon which rest dozens of compressed battle droids. The rack extends forward and deposits the droids into neatly organized rows. Upon activation from an orbiting Droid Control Ship, the droids unfold into their humanoid configuration.
STAPs - STAPs are lightweight reconnaissance and patrol vehicles used by the battle droids of the Trade Federation army. Incorporating repulsorlift technology, the STAP (single trooper aerial platform) is a slim, agile craft sporting a pair of blaster cannons. STAPs are often deployed as support vehicles in conjunction with larger craft.
Locations
Jedi Temple - Removed from the surrounding bustle and urban sprawl by benefit of its colossal height, the Jedi Temple was the home of the Jedi order on Coruscant. It stood alone in its section of the planet-wide city, a towering edifice capped by a crown of five spires that housed the most important temple chambers.
Within one of the outer spires convened the Jedi High Council, the governing body of the order. From its circular Council chamber, a ring of 12 Jedi held court, monitoring galactic events and contemplating the nature of the Force. It was the Council that held final authority on Jedi missions on behalf of the Republic, and on whether prospective candidates were worthy of training.
Elsewhere in the temple, training facilities were staffed by revered Jedi Masters, who guided young Padawans in their first steps toward Jedi Knighthood. The most influential of Masters had private offices to plan and meditate. A well-stocked library contained knowledge from across the galaxy. Advanced communications networks kept the Jedi in touch with galactic events, and landing pads allowed Jedi transports and vessels to launch and land.
In its final years, the Council was led by senior Jedi Mace Windu and Yoda, two very powerful Jedi Masters. At the time of Palpatine's ascendancy to Supreme Chancellor, the Council contained such Jedi luminaries as Ki-Adi-Mundi, Depa Billaba, Eeth Koth, Even Piell, Saesee Tiin, Yarael Poof, Oppo Rancisis, Plo Koon, Yaddle, and Adi Gallia.
Otoh Gunga aka Gunga City - Secreted beneath the surface of a serene Naboo lake is a world entirely different than that encountered above. Here is the hidden domain of the amphibious Gungans, the native inhabitants of the peaceful planet.
The largest Gungan city, Otoh Gunga, is a spectacle to behold. A crowning achievement of unique Gungan technology, the city appears as a glittering cluster of jewel-like bubbles connected together in the dark waters. The bubbles are hydrostatic force-fields that contain breathable atmospheres for the city's inhabitants. Though they are rigid enough to keep the water out, they can be breached by Gungans swimming to and from the city.
The architecture of Otoh Gunga is sweeping in shape, lacking the rectilinear symmetry commonly found in human designs. The Gungans actually grow the building material of their cities, and the elegant structures contained within the bubbles consist of curving forms that look alive.
Inside Otoh Gunga is the High Board Room of the Gungan Rep Council. This is home to the government of the Gungans, where their leader, Boss Nass, resided. During the Trade Federation occupation of Naboo, Nass ignored the battle droid threat, deeming it to be an offworlder concern. The battle droids eventually encroached on Gungan territory, invading Otoh Gunga. The Gungans abandoned their beautiful home, and hid in the nearby forests containing the Gungan Sacred Place.
Devices
A99 Aquata Breather - Having stowed away on Trade Federation invasion craft, the Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn and his Padawan apprentice Obi-Wan Kenobi befriended Jar Jar Binks, a Gungan native to Naboo. The gangly amphibian led them to his home city of Otoh Gunga, which lay hidden deep beneath a swamp lake. To follow the aquatic creature through his native environment, Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan reached into their utility belts and pulled out compact breathing devices for the underwater journey.
Blaster - The standard ranged weapon of both military personnel and civilians in the galaxy, the blaster pistol fires cohesive bursts of light-based energy called bolts. Blasters come in a variety of shapes and sizes, delivering a wide range of damage capability. Many blaster pistols have stun settings that incapacitate a target, rather than inflicting physical damage. While blasters do deliver a searing concussive blast, they can be foiled by magnetic seals and deflector shields.
Lightsaber - The lightsaber is the weapon of a Jedi, an elegant armament of a more civilized time. In comparison, blasters are crude, inaccurate and loud affairs. To carry a lightsaber is an example of incredible skill and confidence, dexterity and attunement to the Force.
When deactivated, a lightsaber appears as a polished metallic handle, about 30 centimeters long, lined with control studs. At the press of a button the energy contained within is liberated and forms as a shaft of pure energy about a meter long. The saber hums and scintillates with a distinct sound. Its shimmering blade is capable of cutting through almost anything, save for the blade of another lightsaber.
In the hands of a Jedi, a lightsaber is almost unstoppable. It can be used to cut through blast doors or enemies alike. Using the Force, a Jedi can predict and deflect incoming blaster bolts, and reflect them back at the firer.
After the extermination of the Jedi ranks, lightsabers became rare relics. The knowledge of their construction disappeared with their masters. Luke Skywalker, the last of the Jedi, built his own lightsaber as the culmination of his training.
Although use of the lightsaber is strictly reserved to the Jedi -- the only ones capable of handling the difficult weapon -- it is also used by their sworn enemies, the Sith.
