| Well Struthers-Dunn was actually found by accident one night when I was out looking for an abandoned Phyciatric Hospital that a friend of mine told me was in the area. Although I never found the hospital, I did find Struthers-Dunn. And a find it was. On first look the place was huge, with offices in the front, and what looked like a factory in the back. We were able to drive right to the back side of the plant and park. As we looked around we found a door that had been pried open sometime before. As we entered the flashlights came on and the mysteries started. As I looked around there was a large room to my left, that was some sort of research room. On the far end there were two smaller rooms, that had a sign on each door, that said " DANGER ESD TESTING" The windows in the doors were tinted. But nothing was left in the rooms. As we left the first large room we found the factory end of the building. In the room it was very dark, and pipes twisted there way along the entire room. On the far side there were a few 55 gallon drums that had the symbol for hydrochloric acid. I than decided to leave that room. We than went down a long hallway with a few smaller rooms on each side, and it that opened up to a large room. It was just the same as the other huge room, with the fact that this one had huge electrical cables coming from the floor. There had to be 25 to 30 of them all spaced apart and cut. All I can figure is that this is where they did work with high voltage. We had also found a few rooms that had parts of electrical relays all over the room. As we proceeded futher up the hallway, we found a room with book after book all over. This room was also victom of a large fire that destoryed atleast half of the room. As I looked at some of the books, I read that they were in trouble due to hazardous waste. We left that room and went to the end of the hallway that ended in the lobby of the building on both sides there were offices and more offices. Most of the offices were trashed. And there was so much junk there. It was like they just up and left. After checking out a few offices we decided to leave. A few weeks later while talking to my uncle who works in the area, if he knew anything about the place, he said that he worked with someone that used to mow the lawn there. He said that they produced electrical relays for the military, mostly the Air Force. But he also said that they also did other research for the military and he was not at all sure what type it was. He said that the guy who mowed the lawn there had to have a special contract to cut the grass, and the guys truck, lawn mower and any other equipment had to be checked, he also had to be checked. He was checked both at entrance and at exit, and also a random times as the guards seamed fit. My uncle did give me one word of warning. He also worked with someone, whos kids were arrested and fined 5,000 dollars for being caught in the building. I for one have not been back since. Weather that is true or not I don't know, but a 5000 dollar fine is nothing to risk, so I would advise admiring from the outside. Also the building has been closed since the early 90's and the building is in bad shape, a lot of the drop ceiling is infact now dropped, and there is a lot of broken glass and insulation on the floors, the place also fills with water at times of rain. And like I said before I wouldn't risk the 5,000 dollar fine. But that is just a word of warning. I will be getting some pictures of the place, but they will be from the outside. |
