| Airco was a gas compression plant located next to the old BF Goodwrench plant. The plant has been closed now for about 20 to 25 years from what I have been told by someone that works at the old BF Goodwrench plant. He said that when the plant was inoperation they compressed gases and even mixed and refined some other gases. And I have had the opertunity to visit the plant on a few different occasions. A lot is still left of the plant and is very interesting to see. The plant itself is still there along with gas holding tanks, flare tower, water tower, truck filling station, and a small tank farm. All of which I explored entirly. The plant still as the machines used to compress the gases, and even one of the compression pistons still has the oil in it. There was about 3 or 4 compression pistons, and large generators. The tank farm consisted of two large, round, tanks for storing the gases, and also had two or three large tanks in the rear. Everything had ladders and a walk way, but they had cut the very bottom of the ladders so you couldn't get up them. And then the flare tower, now that was cool. I would have to est. that the tower was almost 300 ft. high. And we were able to climp it. It was very stable, and the view from the top was amazing. Well that is all I have about Airco, but I will have some pictures soon so you all can see it. One word of warning. This area is patroled by the New Jersey State Police. Of the four times I have been there I have never seen a State Trooper anywheres near the plant, but I have been informed that they patrol that area, so just take it as a warning, because I don't think they would like to find you back there, that area is considered a Hazardous waste site, and is a dangerous place to explore if you are not careful. |
