| Alexander was an important member of the Royal family due to his closeness with Nicholas II. Alexander fell in love with his second cousin Xenia, the eldest daughter of Alexander III. Sandro campaigned with his father for over a year to win the approval of the Emperor and Empress to marry Xenia. The Empress was not to be rushed in this manner and after a long battle, the honor was won and the couple were married on July 25, 1894 in St Petersburg. The union produced seven children, a daughter followed by six sons. A majority of the current Romanovs visible in today's society are descendants of Alexander and members of the Mikhailovichi clan of the Romanovs--those descendant of Mikhail, son of Nicholas I. The Navy was the main occupation and calling for Sandro. He served many years around the world and was an avid collector of books on all things Naval. It was also Alexander who was responsible for modernizing the Russian armed forces by introducing the idea of an Air Force--much to the chagrin of the military leaders of the time. He opened the first flight school in Russia and built an Air Force from the ground up. Spirituality and religion played an important role in the life of Sandro. Not only did he try to live spiritually, he spent a lot of time examining his spirituallity and also spent time in his latter years lecturing on the subject. As a member of the Greek Orthodox Church, he was not always in agreement with the teachings and relied more on what he knew first hand and what came to him in dreams. At one time, a vision of a spirit held a conversation with him outside the casino in Deauville. Alexander wrote several books on spirituality--intended to be read by none. Few copies were printed and their reception was uninportant to Alexander. A true friend to "cousin Nicky" and to Russia, Sandro did his best to serve his countrymen and to prevent the suicide of an Empire. Such as the level-headed advice of Grand Duchess Ella to her sister the Empress Alexandra, this advice fell on deaf ears. |
| This page is intended to give information on specific individuals and descendants of the Romanov Family of Russia, regardless of overlapping in other Royal European houses. I have tried where possible to provide complete genealogical information as well as interesting links to web sites and books about the individual. I have also given information about that individual as I believe it to be through my research. Feel free to email me with corrections, comments, suggestions and information to [email protected]. |
