Doula Myths and Misconceptions

Myth #1:  Doulas only attend home births.
Truth: Mary and I attend home births (even outside at the cottage!) and hospital births.  We do often come to your home to labour there with you until it is time to go to your chosen birth place.

Myth #2:  All doulas are "crunchy granola, Berkenstock wearing, treehugging, bra-burning, chanting, inscence burning earthy all natural birth mommas."
Truth: Mary and I shave but we do like Berkenstocks. (LOL) Most doulas are simply educated women who are moved by the beauty of childbirth either from their own experiences or from watching and studying birth.

Myth #3: Your doula will leave if you get an epidural.
Truth: I'm not sure where this started!  So NOT true.  As your doula we both support our clients choices.  It is our job to educate you to the pro's and con's of all medications and interventions, and support you in your choices.  A labouring mom needs support with or without an epidural.  I can hold moms hand, prepare for when mom is ready to push, take pictures and video, get ice-chips, massage, etc.

"Treating normal labours as though they were complicated can be a self-fulfilling prophecy."
