Ohemaa in indigenous Ghanaian language means Queen Mother. The purpose of our summits, then, is to come together as Queen Mothers to talk about the issues that are specific to us as Women of the African Diaspora. It is necessary for us to have a safe space in which to encourage, nurture, support and empower each other. We come together to share our pain as well as our triumphs, as we build a family and a supportive community of Black women here at Penn State. A long-term goal of these summits is to explore ways to empower women of the African Diaspora within our respective communities to take ownership and authority over our own identity.
