Creating Your Sacred Space

It is important that you create a space that is conducive to meditation, worship and use of divining tools.

First, you should attune yourself to the energy of your surroundings. Things that can interfere with that flow are television sets that interrupt the thought process, high traffic areas like a living room that the whole family uses, or a room that is physically unappealing (a musty basement, or stifling attic).

Some of the negative influences can be lessened by turning off the TV or using the space when most of the family is in bed or away.

Dose this space have a good natural source of light? Can you use candles and incense in this space? It would most likely upset your landlord if you where smudging with sage and set off the smoke alarm.

Once you have made this selection it is important you consecrate the space. You should perform a ritual cleaning. The walls must be washed, the windows cleaned. When sweeping do it in a circular motion to bring the dirt and dust to the middle of the room. As you do this, chant," this is consecrated to good, this is offered to (insert name of deity). Banish all ill will, all negativity". The sweepings should be gathered and cast outside as apart of the ritual.

Now you must plan how this space should be used. I will separate this into three categories.

  1. Worship: It is not necessary to have a large status or altar. But if you wish to have a focal point, it can be as elaborate at buying a hutch at a flea market and opening it up; using the upper shelves to hold your images of the gods. The middle space for holding incense and candles and the lower for books and ritual tools (sage, crystals, objects of nature, or some fabric that can be used as altar cloths). If you are in college or on the move, look at simple coffee table, or bookshelves and think of it as simple yet elegant. With a little work, even milk crates and boards can have fabric draped on it and used.
  2. Divination: You must have a space that is quiet and free of negativity. It should be blessed and free of distraction. You should have ample natural lighting (i.e. candle or sunlight). Many feel that fluorescent lighting hums at a vibration that makes the divinator unreceptive to the message of your tools (cards, runes, scrying bowl, etc.).

3. Spell work: Spell work is deeply involved. You must have the tools at hand and accessible. Most people I know in the craft, like to use the kitchen with a huge wood table and natural lighting. It has to be an area that you can bless and ward. You should however, remember that you need to be uninterrupted. You also need a secure location to house your grimore or book of spells. This highly potent article of magic should never be left out where small children or unknowing people may find it.
