Chapter Six
Little Jazz Isn't So Dumb
conclusion
(part 4)
It had been several months since Greer met Bessie when Crystal decided it was time to check on how the NeoFae were coming along.  Or, really, how they WEREN'T coming along.

No one had been to visit the newcomers for a very long while now, Crystal keeping them all very busy with her other projects.  Usually, one or two of the Orange Fae would bring a basket of apples and berries, now and then sticking an over ripe cantaloupe or two at the very bottom, and dropped it off by the entrance of the NeoFae's camp.  They no longer set the meals out for them, nor helped them with their crops.

Crystal, herself, had just taken care of a situation involving the male Fae and some of the weaker Orange Faes.  At first, the male Fae were not her priority. She let them do as they pleased; making sure the Orange Fae took care of their every need.  However, Crystal didn't realize the affect the men would have on her weaker sisters.  So, she had to demand certain things of the male Fae and create some new rules before the situation became out of hand and she would have no longer been in control.

Any ways, she was feeling quite proud of herself and had decided  to feel even better, so a visit to the NeoFae's camp was in order.  Crystal appeared in the place where the garden had been started, but she only found the remains of abandoned dead plants.

"Where are they?" She demanded, angrily.  "If they disobeyed my orders and stopped this garden, I'll..." She didn't finish her thought because she heard Emeralda calling to her as she came running across the deserted field.

"Crystal, dear cousin, it's been too long." Emeralda ran out to greet Crystal, smiling, genuinely happy to see her.  "Come, we moved the garden.  Wait until you see what we have accomplished.  You will be so proud of us."

About a half mile downstream, Crystal began to see what look liked fruit trees, wheat, and green vegetables.  She was astonished when she reached the site of the new garden.  It was completely full of growing, richly colored fruits and vegetables, the bounty spreading around her for several acres.  Jazz, Greer and Jaida were in the garden, picking some fresh vegetables for the mid-day meal when Emeralda and Crystal approached..

"Look, we no longer have to relieve ourselves in a hole in the ground that will become full and spoiled the lovely fragrance of our home." Jalen was showing Crystal the "indoors bathroom".

"We have developed a way for the water to wash away our waste, filtering it into a place where we can recycle and use it on our crops."

"And," he continued, " we hollowed out a tree trunk, gave it a hard shell on the inside and outside.  Water flows in from these tubes, and we can sit in the water to bath ourselves and stay warm in our cave."
Next, Jaida lead Crystal to the food preparation and eating area.

"Look at your counters, tables and chairs we made with the wood we found not far from our camp.  Emeralda and Jade decorated the tops with color that they made from plant and clay.  And see the many fruits we can now grow on our own?  With the foodstuff we make from the wheat, and the many variety of fruits and nuts we are finding on Gaia, we now have such a great choice for wholesome meals.  Ive already notice our men becoming stronger,  and our little ones are beginning to change and grow."
Crystal was utterly amazed at the vegetables in the NeoFae's new garden.
Then, Crystal was taken inside of the cave.

"I was able to contain fire in a glass and metal holder so that I could bring light into our caves. We are no longer in the dark once the sun sets."  Crystal did not respond.   "I also made a more comfortable bed with the feathers I find on the ground after the birds have cleaned themselves and have removed the old ones."

Greer stopped for a moment, thinking.

"Funny, it's almost  as if they  are bringing me their feathers, I am finding so many!"  He shook his head. "But, that would be unlikely, wouldn't it."

       Crystal did not respond.

"Well,  then Jaida wove the leaves and flowers together to make a more heavier covering for us so that we are not cold at night."

"Is that all?"  Crystal said in a near whisper.

"Well, Greer, show Crystal what you made."

Greer beamed as he left the cave to retrieve something that he left on a tree stump outside.  Jaida and Crystal followed, though Crystal seemed to almost drag, her light glowing wings suddenly heavy and dull.

They found Greer under a tree beside the small fall where
the stream came out of the mountain.  He had a small wooden
contraption under one chin as he cradled it with his shoulder
and upper arm.  There were strings pulled through the middle
almost from end to end, and he was dragging a long wooded
stick with a thicker substance strung from end to end across
the other strings.  And what came from that contraption under
Greer's chin was magical because it produced a melodious
sound, which had never been heard on Gaia before, as he
moved his playing arm  back and forth, his eyes to the sky
as if he was playing to JyM, their goddess, in her prison.

"Isn't it beautiful," Jaida said, admiring her mate's inate talent.  "Now that we don't have to spend our entire day working on the crops, we have time to enjoy ourselves.
Greer created this, his instrument, one evening, and he began to play.  He enjoys it so much, and we enjoy listening to the sound that it produces, that we have been encouraged to created our own insturments to join him.  They are not completed yet. However, we want to play for all of our cousins when we are ready.  Wouldn't that be wonderful?"

       Crystal said nothing.

The NeoFae's new preparation and eating area.

The NeoFae's new cave.
The NeoFae's cave bathroom with indoor plumbing.
Greer plays a beautiful melody
on his stringed intrument.
Crystal wandered aimlessly in the NeoFae's camp,  speechless, not hearing Jaida or the others calling after her.

How did they do all of this?   And they did it all without magic.  Crystal was dumbfounded for the first time in her very long life.

The NeoFae let her wander, afraid for Crystal for they had never seen her like this, and they didn't know what to do.   "I don't understand", she muttered to herself as she revisited all the places she had already seen.  Soon, Crystal found herself once again in the garden, staring at the crops with astonishment.

Then, suddenly, Crystal began to stomp the ground, waving her hands hysterically as she became so angry that she was actually throwing a fit!
Crystal stared at the rows of turnips, carrots and beets.  "How could this be?"  She finally said, pointing at the ground.

Although she was really speaking to herself,  Greer proudly explained, "it just came to me one day!"

He beamed up at his mate and son, then continued. "The ground where we first  attempted to grow our crops wasn't fertile.  Gaia holds many different types of soil.  The soil nearest the water was more fertile.  Then after some experimenting, I discovered that  Gaia enjoyed our waste and actually responded positively to it, so  we  mixed it with her soil.  Then everything began to grow at a rapid pace.  It's been amazing!"

Crystal suddenly became aware of a tool with three long teeth stuck in the ground beside Jaida.  "And...where...did...THAT... come from!"  She pointed at the shiny tool, the words barely coming forth, she was in so much shock at what she was looking at.

"Oh, well," Greer continued excitedly, "that was Jalen's idea!  He found metal in the rocks on the other side of our mountain one day when he and I were exploring.  In a flash, he knew something like this and others would make our gardening task much easier.  No more using simple sticks and stones!"

Then Jaida spoke, "We can't explain it, but lately, we've been getting many ideas. Come, cousin, our elder sister, let us show you. We know you will be happy for us."

Crystal was lead through a tour of the NeoFae's new camp.
"NO, NO, NO, THIS WAS NOT TO HAPPEN!"

She shouted up into the air at no one, dust from the ground beginning to rise and swirl around her legs as she continued to stomp her feet vigorously.

"They were to be miserable, depended on me, living in the dark and staying weak! HOW DID THIS HAPPEN!"
Crystal, again, staring at the crops in disbelief.
Crystal has a fit of anger!
Then, suddenly, in the middle of her tantrum,  Crystal felt Jazz smiling at her.   She didn't see him, she FELT HIM SMILING.  She turned quickly, glaring  at Jazz who stood just a few feet away from her.  He looked up into Crystal's face, calmly, emotionless, but his eyes pierced hers, and she KNEW!

"It was YOU!"  She pointed accusingly at Jazz.  "I don't know how, but I know you were involved!"

Jaida finally approached Crystal to comfort her and to protect her child.  She tried to put her arms around Crystal to control her shaking, feeling the real heat that was eminating  from her.  But,  Crystal would have no part of it and jerked out of Jaida's reach.

"Elder sister, please calm down.   Jazz has done nothing, he is just a small child.  Why do you speak to him this way?  Here, please let me help you."

"Stay away from me!" And with that, Crystal was gone, a slight steam raising straight up into the sky.    Jaida and Greer stood wide-eyed looking at the spot where Crystal had just disappeared, mouths agaped, just as surprised about her sudden departure as they were her unreasonable outburst.

"What was that about?"  Jaida asked, a little shaken.

"I don't know," Greer said looking at his son.  "Jazz?  Is there something you want to tell us?"

Jazz also looking at the last spot where Crystal had been, for he knew that she was currently flying madly in Gaia's sky, trying to figure out how Jazz tricked her.

Then, slowly, he smiled innocently at his father.  "No, father.  But, elder cousin did frighten me quite a bit.  Maybe it's best if we don't speak of this again.  Can I have a glass of milk?"

"Jazz," Greer smiled lovingly back at his son, "you sometimes amaze me at how wise you can be.  Yes, let's forget about this, shall we, and go get a glass of milk."
