Elementary Methods

Listening Lesson Plan - First or Second

Student Goals: Listening to and identifying songs that get faster and get slower.

Materials Needed: Accompaniment instrument (autoharp), record, record player, line drawings, pictures of millwheel and train

Introduction: Review of two songs learned previously - one fast and one slow (My Hat)

Process: My Hat - A & L pg. 54 - accompanied by teacher, the class sings this song and gradually gets faster and faster as the teacher plays the accompaniment faster. Then, the class identifies which line drawing goes with the way they just sang the song.

Zulu Game Song - students listen to song first time tapping beat with hand on leg. Second time, they listen for tempo alterations and talk about the song.

The Millwheel - same process as before and then talk about how the two pieces were similar and different in terms of getting faster or getting slower.

Little Train of Calpira - same process as for the Millwheel

Evaluation: Students listen to recordings of two other songs: one that gets slower and another that gets faster. They must identify what happens to the tempo in each song.
