Rhythm Lesson Plan - Fourth or Fifth Grade
Student Goals: Reading and playing rhythms that include half,
quarter, eighth notes by themselves and as a part of a song accompaniment.
Materials Needed: Glockenspiels, alto xylophones, bass xylophones,
mallets, copies of music, pencils, and blank sheet music.
Introduction: Review of song previously learned - say that they
will learn an accompaniment to it

Process: Rhythm Practice
- Write first rhythm on board and clap
- Change and go through all rhythms
Rhythm Practice for This Land Is Your Land
- Students clap each part
- Students split into 3 parts and clap rhythms
- Students play rhythms on instruments
This Land Is Your Land
- Students play each part of ostinato
- Students play 3 part ostinato
Evaluation: Working in pairs, students will write a common time
four measure rhythm line to practice and play on their instrument for the
whole class. They need to include half notes, quarter notes, eighth notes
and quarter rests.
