Elementary education is a multi-faceted discipline, requiring the elementary teacher to have a wide expanse of knowledge. It is necessary for them to be trained and well-versed in a multitude of subjects as they can be called upon to teach any or all of them. Physical education, just as math or science education, is an integral part of the educational experience for all elementary students.
Exercise
One of the first reasons to have a sound physical education program is the need for children to exercise. As a society, we are becoming more obese each year and therefore need exercise to be a part of education to stem this rise. Students at the elementary level also have a lot of energy. Throughout the day in the typical classroom, little attention is paid to the need for a physical release of energy. Physical education and recess accomplish this release. While recess is important for free play, physical education gives students a structured set of activities that enable them to learn, but also exercise. Instead of sitting, they get to move around and experience immediately what they have just learned. By allowing students the chance to exercise, it allows them to be more focused upon returning to the general classroom, and thus, more learning can occur.
Motor Skills
In addition to exercise, physical education teaches students many different and varied motor skills. Young children do not know how to operate their body in the many necessary ways. In essence, physical education allows them to experiment and assess their abilities. A well-structured physical education program would also have the students repeat the movements in order for them to get better at the skill. This reinforces the idea that they need to practice to become more proficient; something that is applicable to every subject and aspect of life. Physical education also allows students to experience things they would otherwise never have in their life. For example, gym scooters are not found in many homes, but the use of them in the gym can help students learn to maneuver their body in new ways. Further, this exposure to certain activities may influence students to pursue a particular sport or activity, making it a lifelong enjoyment. This affects students for many years beyond the elementary level and typically throughout their entire life. Physical education helps students to develop motor skills for use not only in the gym, but in all of life.
Team Building & Social Skills
While some of the activities in physical education are independent, a large number of them put students on teams or working in small groups. A prime example is a team sport such as soccer. Working together amicably towards a common goal is an essential skill that all students must learn to survive in the real world. They learn to be leaders, followers, helpers, and a multitude of other roles. In addition, students learn sportsmanship and good citizenship. Many life lessons have come out of the arena of sports. These lessons are invaluable.
Fitness
Physical education provides students with a framework to continue to lead a healthy life. Physical fitness is, or at least should be, an important aspect of every life. Teachers should strive to teach the role of physical fitness through the various activities in their class. Again, this helps to overcome the increasing number of obese people in our society.
Fun
Last, but not least, physical education is fun for elementary students. Physical activity is a great way to break up the academic day. Students make achievements that carry over into their academics, giving them a better self-concept and more confidence. People of all ages need to have fun and physical education at the elementary level provides a great release.
In the elementary education curriculum, physical education is an important aspect that should not be taken lightly. A fully integrated education is best for all students. Students are able to exercise, develop motor skills, develop team and social skills, learn physical fitness, and have fun in the process. Physical education will definitely be an integral part of my elementary curriculum.
