"Behind the Shadows"

I hid behind the shadows
Hoping no one would find me there
I was lost and I was incomplete
I had someone to care
I could see the sunlight in the distance
Yet I was safe underneath the tree
I was protected from the rain
Although I wasn't quite me
I was afraid to wonder into the forest
What if I was alone?
I did not want to get lost
Yet I might have wandered if I had known
That someone would cut down my tree
And dig up the roots beneath me
I would have run into the sunlight
I would have been able to see
The world and all it holds within the forest
Now I'm in the open
With fear in my eye
I take one step at a time
Looking behind me every now and then
Thinking aout my tree
Saying to myself I remember when
I was caught under the shadows
But now I am free
I will find no other shelter
Because now I have me
