Clan MacKay's Tribal Lore

Hosted by www.Geocities.ws

Clan MacKay was founded in the fall of September 1998 by Sir Hamish Swordbanger, current Thane of MacKay. The Clan arose from the ashes of another group known as the Crusaders of the Cross (which operated out of the First Assembly of God church in Kenosha, Wisconsin) when the gracious and noble Sir Taliesin the Giftedhand approached Hamish about stepping in as Lord over the Household in his place. The group at that time was relatively small, having shrunk to about 10 members, and there was much debate as to which household was actually sponsored by the church. There was the Household of Steal, (Earl William the Wolfs House) the Household of Ravens flight (Sir Taliesens House) and the Household of Griffins Beard (Sir Caynon of Twotorcs House). Each of these had existed to greater and lesser degrees within the previous organization and each of the Nobles of these households had contributed their own blood, sweat, and tears to its development, yet with the departure of each went their respective households. This left Hamish (himself only a year and a half vested in the pursuit of Knighthood) without title or liege from which to gather counsel.

In the vacuum of experienced leadership, the young Hamish rose up to accept the mantle and together with those who remained at his side, founded the Clan MacKay based upon Hamishs own knowledge of Scottish History and Personal Family Heritage. The eight other founding members of the Clan consisted of the following young pages: Derrious, Roland, Edward, Conrad, Charles the Stone, Wilhelm the Gnarled Root, and Gerhart the Warhammer; as well as squire Gunthor Blackhammer. The Clan resided at First Assembly of God until the winter of March 2000, when the Clan relocated to Lakeshore Tabernacle, the home church of its new leader. Now recognized as Sir, having earned the title of Knight Banneret through his steadfastness to the cause and dedication to the excellence of the established program as well as through his own contributions to improve upon it, Hamish began to expand his holdings. The first act of expansion was to woo to his cause a Nobleman by the name of Pheregas who would partner together with the enterprising knight to see Clan MacKay blossom into the growing and thriving household it is today.

To do this, the two initially approached the program as a youth ministry for boys, inspired by the book Raising a Modern Day Knight and sought out the aid of Lakeshores youth pastor, Jarm Turner who embraced it and helped them gain the full support of their home church. During all of this time, it was believed by both men that there were no medieval ministries of this caliber left in the country and that those involved in the original group were inactive, therefore they adopted a title for the ministry that they thought was long dead and therefore safe to use: Royal Order of Chivalry. They would soon discover to their excitement, that they were wrong.

Sir Hamish began to search and found that the Order did indeed have some chapters left in Florida. The Clan began to correspond with members of the Royal House of Dover, and eventually became recognized nationally as an official Clan of the Royal Order of Chivalry in the Spring of May 31, 2001. Over the years we have enjoyed much merriment, feasts, tournaments, and campaigns. Since our beginning at First Assembly of God until now the Clan has grown prospered and given birth to new Households in the Realm.

CLAN TARTAN
There is none! Clan tartan setts were not in use in the Middle Ages. The Chief favors Sable (black), Scarlet (red), and Seferon (yellow) (our heraldic colors), but he and his Clan wear what they can make or get.

CLAN BADGE
The Badge of the Clan is "a lion's head erased Or, crowned and langued Gules". In English that means a yellow lions head ripped from his body bearing a crown with its red tongue sticking out.
The badge is taken from the Chiefs Arms and anyone may wear it to show their loyalty to the Chief and his clan.

MOTTO
In Gaelic: "Bheir mi an claidheamh" Translated to English it reads: "I bring the sword"

OUR WAR CRY
In Latin: "Huzza Dios!" Which means: "Hurray God!"

THE OATH
"As God mote me, so shall I serve thee."

Traditionally, joining a clan required an oath or "band of manrent". Below is the Clan's Official Band of Manrent.

THE BAND OF MANRENT
