About Sirens
I suppose by now you're all wondering what a Siren is. Quite simply, a Siren is a beautiful female creature similar to a mermaid who has an irresistable voice. The Sirens dwell on islands out in the middle of the sea, far from any land. They are cursed, because any man who hears their song is so overcome that he leaps from his ship-- to certain death on the rocks of their island. A Siren's song is so entrancing that it holds whoever hears it in their power, and if the Siren is malicious, this can be very deadly. However, most Sirens just long to be loved, which is a curse to them since everyone they attempt to lure ends up dying as result.
Sirens have been depicted as part woman, part bird, and part woman part fish, like a mermaid. The paintings above and to the right depicted the Sirens as human women, except the parts of them that are wet turn to scales. Above, a Siren weeping over her victim, to the right, a Siren with an instrument and the man drawn into her trap.
