MULTAN: Unidentified gunmen shot dead Renowned Gynaecologist Dr Suraiya Nisar in Dera Ghazi Khan on Sunday, police and her family said.

Doctor Suraiya Nisar was shot dead as she came out of an operating theatre in the Al-Zohra Hospital, local police chief Muhammad Usman said, adding the attackers arrived at the hospital on a motorbike. One stayed at the main gate of the hospital while the other entered the premises and sprayed the doctor with bullets as she emerged from surgery, Usman said.

The assailants fled on the motorbike, witnesses said. They also shot at Nisars driver as he tried to chase them, wounding the man, the witnesses said.

The "possibility of terrorist activity cannot be ruled out," Usman said, adding "Police are investigating this case from all aspects, whether it is sectarian killing, or the motive was personal rivalry."

"We have no enmity, we have friendly relations with people of all sects. I am confident that it was a sectarian killing," said her brother, Iftikhar Hussain, himself a doctor.

Local Shia leader Syed Nadeem Haider told reporters: "We believe it is a sectarian killing because doctor Suraiya Nisars family was on the hit list of terrorists since long and they received threats in the past."

After the attack tension gripped the city, as hundreds of people gathered outside the hospital, chanting slogans against the government.

Mob damages private properties

MULTAN: An irate mob protesting against the authorities failure in arresting the killers of a lady doctor attacked a bus of the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) in Dera Ghazi Khan and tried to set it on fire, but police foiled their bid.

The mob then hurled bricks and stones on the showroom of a mobile phone company, several shops and a petrol pump on the College Road, damaging them badly.

Some of them fired shots into the air. They chanted slogans against the police and administration.

"Shia leaders have assured that they would strictly abide by the law.

However, heavy police contingent was deployed on the main squares and also patrolling in the city to avert any eventuality," said Hamayun Shafi, Deputy Inspector General of Police, Dera Ghazi Khan.

Shia leader Syed Nadeem Haider alleged that police failed to apprehend the culprits and find any clue of terrorists who gunned down lady doctor Surayya Nisar on Sunday.

Instead police took three residents of Dera Ismail Khan in custody who were returning from Dubai and recovered a 30-bore pistol from them, he said.
