PESHAWAR: A superintendent of police along his son was shot dead by unidentified people near Darya Khan bridge in Dera Ismail Khan district on Sunday evening.

The police sources are suspecting the murder as sectarian violence.

Rajab Ali Shah, a superintendent of NWFP police who was presently serving in central police offices in Peshawar, and his son Muazzam were visiting their fields near Darya Khan bridge on Sunday evening. "At about 6:15 pm unknown people opened fire on the police officer and his son, killing both of them on the spot," an official of the Gomal University police station told The News.

Rajab Ali Shah 56, belonging to Shia community, was living in Chah Said Munawwar. He was on two months leave and was taking rest in his native village. His son Muazzam 20, according to police officials, was a student.

"The motive behind the incident could not be known as the investigating party has not yet return from the spot. But we are suspecting it might be an incident of sectarian violence as the deceased belonged to Shia community and the police are probing in that context," a police official said.

He added that sectarian violence in the Dera Ismail Khan district had been started since 1988. However, he said that not a single member of the family of Rajab Ali had been targeted in the sectarian violence in past.

The police station Cantonment, in which jurisdiction Rajab Ali was residing, has also confirmed the death of SP Rajab and his son.
