Syed Hassan Raza, custodian of Imambargah Khaima-e-Sadat, shot dead in Lahore

LAHORE, Mar 19 2002: Custodian of one of the City's main Imambarah Khaima-e-Sadat located at Syed Mouj Darya Road was murdered. The motorcyclists, near the Vocational Training Institute for Women at the Jain Mandir Chowk, collided with a college-going girl, witnesses said.

As a result of collision, an eyewitness said, the motorcycle, its riders and the girl all fell on the road. "An old man seeing the collision while standing in front of Imambargah Khaima-e-Sadat rushed to help the girl, the two desperadoes, trying to escape, shot at him and injured him as soon as he reached near them, an eyewitness said.

The victim was identified 55-year-old Syed Hassan Raza, custodian (Mutawali) of Imambargah Khaima-e-Sadat. The girl waiting for the public transport was her daughter and he himself was standing outside his house in the Imambargah waiting to see her off.

"Hasan had actually rushed to pick her daughter up and check the persons riding the bike, but the killers took him for a threat and shot him dead," a local shopkeeper said. Later, the desperate killers abandoned their motorcycle along with a mauser, and held a nearby motorcycle-rickshaw driver at gunpoint and escaped, added the witnesses.

The tragic incident triggered panic in the whole vicinity and among the AG Office staff. Police cordoned off the area, as people rushed to witness the scene. The entry and exit roads to the two spots were also barricaded for quite sometime.

Heavy police contingents accompanied by the Investigation and Watch & Ward SSP arrived at the place. Apart from them, the movement of intelligence agencies personnel and international media was also witnessed.

Father of six, three daughters among them, Syed Hasan Raza was reported to be a retired AG Office official. Being the custodian of Khaima-e-Sadat, he was supposed to deal with all the affairs relating to the present Ashura at his Imambargah.

Police sources said it was yet to be ascertained whether or not the motorcycle used in the attack was stolen. However, its real number was discovered (LXR-403). "Some witnesses have identified that the accused were clad in Shalwar Kamiz with their faces covered with bristles.They looked between 25 to 30 years, one of them was lean and the other was flabby," a police officer said and added that they had not covered their faces with masks . A case was registered against the unidentified attackers.
