KARACHI: Leader of the defunct Lashkar-e-Jhangvi Attaullah
was convicted in a sectarian killing case and sentenced to death by the Anti
Terrorism Court Judge, Haque Nawaz Balouch, on Wednesday.
The court, however, acquitted three other activists of the
same militant outfit, Ajmal alias Akram Lahori, Malik Tassadaq and Muhammad
Azam for want of incriminating material against them. According to the
prosecution, the accused committed the murder of Muhammad Nazeer outside
Imambargah Zainab in Rizvia Society on April 7, 2002. Nazeer was standing
guard outside the Imambargah when he was shot dead.
The court examined a total of 13 prosecution witnesses,
including two eyewitnesses, in the case who fully supported the case against
Attaullah. The eyewitnesses, however, deposed that they had seen Attaullah
firing on the deceased. They have not attributed anything to the co-accused.
The court, while extending benefit-of-doubt to the
co-accused, acquitted all the three. It, however, convicted Attaullah and
sentenced him to death. The court also fined him RS 0.2 million. The case was
prosecuted by State Counsel Mazhar Qayyum, while the accused were defended by
advocate M R Syed.
