Dr Athar Husain Rizvi shot and wounded in Malir

KARACHI, May 5: A doctor was shot and wounded outside his clinic in Khokhrapar, Malir, on Sunday. The police said that as Dr Athar Husain Rizvi, aged 50, arrived at his Swaleh Clinic in F-South in Khokhrapar on his motorcycle, two unidentified men, who were waiting for him, opened fire on him and escaped on their motorcycle.
The doctor was rushed to Jinnah Post-graduate Medical Centre (JPMC) where he was provided treatment. He was later shifted to a private hospital.
Sources at the JPMC said that the doctor had been hit by a bullet in his left cheek which pierced through the right side of his neck. Despite being wounded, the doctor recorded his statement to the police. He was stated to be in stable condition when this report was filed.
Dr Rizvi resided in Sabir Colony, Malir Extension, and he was a well-known doctor in the area, the police said.
Police find clue to doctor's attackers
KARACHI: Police claimed to have found clue to the
accused who shot at doctor Athar Rizvi at his clinic in Khokharapar
area on Sunday. A Sindh police spokesman said on Sunday that in the
light of the statements of eyewitnesses, police have found reliable
clues to the attackers. Meanwhile, IGP Sindh Syed Kamal Shah, Capital
City Police Officer (CCPO) Asad Jehangir and DIG Operations Tariq
Jameel visited the injured doctor at Liaquat National Hospital and
inquired about his health. IGP Sindh assured Dr Rizvi that police
would arrest the accused very soon and they would be awarded exemplary
punishment. Doctors at hospital informed the IGP Sindh that Dr Rizvi's
condition was out of danger.

Three LJ activists get death penalty

KARACHI, July 6: Judge Haq Nawaz Baloch of the Anti-Terrorism Court No. 5 on Tuesday awarded death penalty to three workers of the banned Lashkar-i-Jhangvi in five sectarian murder cases.
Ataullah, Mohammed Azam and Mohammed Riaz stood quiet behind the bars as the judge announced the verdict inside the Central Prison around 1pm. The judge also ordered confiscation of convicts' properties worth Rs500,000 each in every murder case.
Ataullah, already condemned to death in several other sectarian murder cases, was sentenced to death in all five murder cases, while Mohammad Azam, a co-accused in four cases, was awarded death penalty in three cases as he was acquitted in one of the cases.
Another case against them pertained to the killing of Syed Athar Hussain Rizvi, Pesh Imam of Asgharia Imambargah, on May 3, 2001, in Korangi. According to the prosecution, the accused came to the house of the Pesh Imam on foot around 10pm.
They called the victim and as he opened the door, one of the accused opened fire on Mr Rizvi. The same accused were also found guilty of having killed another Pesh Imam of an imambargah and his son on September 12, 2001 in Gizri.
