Most wanted serial killer of Lashkar-i-Jhangvi shot dead by Police in Karachi

KARACHI, April 4: Police shot dead a wanted suspect, Lal Din alias Laloo, a commander of the banned Lashkar-i-Jhangvi, on Thursday afternoon in Gulshan-i-Iqbal. According to police, the CID got a tip-off that Laloo was present in a shanty town behind Moti- Mahal in Gulshan.

Police raided the area. Sensing the police closing in on, the suspect tried to flee by opening fire on the police. The police returned the fire, killing him on the spot.

Caught in the cross-fire, a pedestrian, identified as Rizwan, was also wounded. He was taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital. He was admitted there for treatment as he had received a bullet in the abdomen.

The police took Laloo's body to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, where it was kept in the casualty ward till 10pm for official identification.

Senior police officials were tight-lipped over the identification of the suspect. CID SP Zubair Mehmood also declined to confirm the identity of the suspect.

Later, confirming the suspect's identity, the city police chief, Asad Jehangir, told Dawn that Laloo was identified by his two sisters and brothers-in-law at the JPMC.

The suspect was wanted in several high-profile killings in the city, including that of the interior minister's brother Ehteshamuddin, PSO MD Shaukat Raza Mirza (more) and Sadiq Ali Hamsherey (more). The Capital City Police Chief added that Laloo was also involved in the killing of doctors. Meanwhile, police brought several prisoners from the Central Jail and a dismissed policeman, who used to live in Laloo's neighbourhood in Orangi Town, to identify the suspect in the hospital.

Sources in the CID said Laloo was the city commander of the banned Lashkar-i-Jhangvi, working under the Riaz Basra group. Two other similar groups are still operating in the city, the sources added.

Laloo's body was lying at the JPMC's emergency ward for the completion of formalities till the filing of this report. It was being taken care of by the Saddar Town police, as the JPMC falls under their jurisdiction.

According to a police statement issued on Thursday night, Laloo carried a head money of Rs1,000,000. He had been carrying out his activities in the city since 1997. Besides being the city commander of the Lashkar-i-Jhangvi, Laloo was also acting as deputy to Akram Lahori, another prominent figure of the Lashkar, the statement added.

CID SHO Umar Khatab, who headed the police party, was promoted to DSP's rank. Awards for the other policemen were also announced.
