31-05-2001

KARACHI, May 31: A doctor was shot dead outside his clinic by unknown assailants in Gulshan-i-Iqbal on Thursday night. Eyewitnesses said that Dr Syed Jafar Raza, 40, was standing outside his ENT General Clinic in Block-16 Gulshan-e-Iqbal, when some unidentified men, riding on a bike, came and opened fire.

Dr Raza died on the spot. His body was shifted to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre where he was pronounced dead. He received two gun shots - a fatal bullet in the head and another in the jaw -, the medico-legal officer said.

A senior police official told Dawn that it was too early to ascertain the motive behind the killing, but the possibility of sectarianism could not be ruled out. "However," he added, "we are investigating the matter." The funeral prayers will be held at Madinatul Ilm mosque, block 5, Gulshan-i-Iqbal at 2.30 p.m.

TJP President Allama Hasan Turabi, while condemning the killing, termed it an act of terrorism aimed at creating tension as the last Azadari procession was scheduled to be taken out today (8th Rabi-ul-Awal).
