Masked men kill Syed Abid Abbas Naqvi, civil engineer in Quetta

QUETTA Aug 29 2001: Two masked motorcyclists shot dead a civil engineer, Abid Abbas Naqvi, on busy Sariab Road here on Tuesday morning and fled from the scene. He was 50.

He leaves behind a widow, four daughters and two sons.

Sariab police said the deceased was on his way back after dropping his wife who is a lady doctor in a health centre near AGPR's office, when the assailants opened fire at his car with an automatic weapon. He was rushed to the Civil Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The deceased was working as sub-divisional officer Building and Roads department Balochistan and was posted at Bolan Medical College Complex. His body was taken over by the family members. He was buried at a local graveyard. A large number of relatives and friends rushed to his residence to attend the funeral and sympathise with the bereaved family.

Police are investigating into the incident. -APP

SDO's murder: four suspects held

QUETTA: Police have arrested four people in connection with the murder of SDO B&R Syed Abid Abbas Naqvi, sources said on Wednesday. Naqvi was shot dead by two masked men here on Tuesday last. The police said that they had arrested the four suspects -- Ramazan Mengal, Rahmatullah, Saleem Bungalzai and Muhammad Usman -- in various raids conducted in different parts of the city.

Meanwhile, the leaders of various religious and political parties have strongly condemned the Naqvi's killing and demanded of the government to apprehend the culprits without delay. Balochisan President of Tehrik-e-Jafria Pakistan Allama Mehdi Najafi said that the government had failed to provide security to the life and property of the citizens. He demanded of the government to arrest the culprits within 24 hours.

A spokesman for Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan has also castigated the incident terming it a conspiracy to foil the newly-launched local government system by deteriorating the law and order situation.

In a statement issued here on Wednesday the spokesman strongly condemned police raids at the SSP offices and the arrest of party activists. He demanded of the government to arrest the "real" culprits and avoid harassing innocent citizens.
