06-27-2001

Hassan Ali Shah Kazmi, a veteran Shia leader of the area, was going on his scooter to the sessions court when he was intercepted by two gunmen, opened fire on him and fled the scene.

Mr Kazmi received five bullets and was taken to the district headquarters hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

As the news of the killing spread in the city, thousands of protesters took to the streets and blocked the Circular Road in front of the hospital and set old tyres on fire. They also pelted stones at shops and other private and public buildings.

The enraged youths also put the PTCL fibre cable on fire. Other buildings which were damaged included Rose hotel, Golden Star hotel, UBL main branch, and the Kodac colour lab. An electric shop was also put on fire by the mob. As violence erupted in the city, all shops and markets were closed down.

The city police station registered a case against Saifur Rehman Bangash and Abdur Razzaq, leaders of the Sipah-i-Sahaba Pakistan.

Later in the afternoon, a group of Shia youths attacked the shop of Saifur Rehman and destroyed all items.
