Doctor shot dead in Karachi

KARACHI, June 26: A doctor was shot dead outside his clinic in Soldier Bazaar on Tuesday.



Police said Dr Mohammed Raza Pirani, aged 40, was about to leave in his car (ACC-195) at Shamsheer Clinic in Soldier Bazaar No 2 when unidentified assailants, riding on a motorcycle, opened fire injuring him seriously.

He was rushed to Civil Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival. The doctor suffered two bullets wounds, one to the neck and the other to the temple, the hospital sources said. His family did not allow autopsy and took away the body.

He leaves behind four children and wife, also a physician who at times examined patients in the Soldier Bazaar clinic.

The clinic is named after Ameer Ali Shamsheer, the late Raza's father, who was present at the funeral prayers of his son. Namaz-i-Janaza was offered at Mehfil-i-Shah-i-Khorasan, which was attended by a large number of people in a highly-charged atmosphere on Tuesday night.

Residents of the area said the deceased was a popular physician of the area, and daily he examined a large number of patients in his clinic. He had been running the clinic for the past 13 years.

After the killing tension gripped the area and shopkeepers pulled down their shutters. Rangers were patrolling the area.

Three LJ activists get death penalty

KARACHI, July 6: Judge Haq Nawaz Baloch of the Anti-Terrorism Court No. 5 on Tuesday awarded death penalty to three workers of the banned Lashkar-i-Jhangvi in five sectarian murder cases.

Ataullah, Mohammed Azam and Mohammed Riaz stood quiet behind the bars as the judge announced the verdict inside the Central Prison around 1pm. The judge also ordered confiscation of convicts' properties worth Rs500,000 each in every murder case.

Ataullah, already condemned to death in several other sectarian murder cases, was sentenced to death in all five murder cases, while Mohammad Azam, a co-accused in four cases, was awarded death penalty in three cases as he was acquitted in one of the cases.

Mohammed Riaz was found guilty of committing murder and was also condemned to death, with Ataullah, in the case. Ataullah and Mohammed Azam were awarded death penalty for killing Dr Raza Peerani on June 26, 2003, in Soldier Bazaar.

The two had stopped their bike beside the doctor's car as he got into it after leaving his clinic and the pillion rider, Ataullah, opened fire. Two dispensers at the clinic who had witnessed the scene identified the two LJ men as killers in the court.
