Tehrik Jafaria man shot dead

MULTAN, Jan 25: Two unidentified gunmen shot dead a Tehrik Jafaria Party activist and injured two others near Sardarpur village, 22 kilometres from Kabirwala on Thursday. It was the second sectarian assassination in less than a week, police said.

Five days back an Iranian teacher, Agha Sultani, was gunned down in Karachi.

Syed Amir Hussain Lak, 36, a TJP vice-president of Khanewal district, was riding a motorcycle to a school where he worked as a teacher, when the two assailants, who were pursuing him on a motorbike opened fire on him at 9.30am.

He died on the spot. His nephew, who was also riding with him, and a passer-by, Manzoor, were injured.

Witnesses said that the attackers were 22-23 years old, one of them was bearded.

Police have registered a case against the assailants. Heavy police contingent have been deployed in the area to avert any untoward situation.

The TJP chief Allama Sajid Naqvi in his condolence message has expressed concern at the assassination of Amir Hussain Lak and demanded immediate arrest of the killers.

Agencies add: "We suspect a sectarian motive in the killing and an investigation is underway," a police officer said.

Arrest of SSP chief demanded
LAHORE, Jan 25: Some TJP leaders have demanded that Sipah-i-Sahaba Pakistan chief Maulana Azam Tariq should be tried and sentenced on the charge of owning a "terrorist", Haq Nawaz, as a member of his party.

At a news conference here on Thursday, they demanded that Haq Nawaz should be hanged, as originally decided by the Supreme Court.

They alleged that the government and the SSP were collaborating with each other.

Those who addressed the news conference were: Shahid Husain Naqvi, acting TJP president (Moosavi group), Prof Nusrat, Malik Ijaz and Iftikhar Husain.
