MAILSI July 24 2001: A religious leader was killed and his two companions were injured when three unidentified men opened indiscriminate firing at them, outside the offices of an Army monitoring team on Tuesday. Syed Ziaul Hassan Kirmani, member of a religious group and former chairman of Union Council Shah Sattar, along with his two friends -- Syed Liaquat Hussain Shah of Chak 1/M and Sheikh Muhammad Sharif of Kehror Pakka -- had come to meet the incharge of Army Monitoring Team Maj Zaka at Mailsi Committee Bagh, situated in the centre of the city. As soon as they came out of the offices at about 1 pm, three unidentified terrorists showered them with bullets. Syed Kirmani, father of newly-elected Nazim from the Union Council Shah Sattar, Syed Tajamul Zia Kirmani, died on the spot while his companions sustained critical injuries. They were taken to THQ Hospital from where they were referred to Nishtar Hospital Multan in serious condition. The assailant fled towards the Colony Road, while resorting to aerial firing. The News learnt that the terrorists also crushed a child under the wheels of their motorcycle while fleeing. AFP adds: "It appears to be a sectarian attack but we are not ruling out the possibility of personal enmity," deputy inspector general of Multan police Shaukat Javed said. He added the condition of the two injured was serious. "They have received multiple bullet wounds," he said.

Mailsi ambush TJP man succumbs to injuries

MULTAN, July 25: A man who sustained injuries in an attack on a Tehrik-i-Jafria Pakistan leader in Mailsi on Tuesday died in the Nishtar Hospital on Wednesday. Liaquat Shah was shifted to the Multan hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

TJP leader and former Vehari district council member Syed Ziaul Hasan Kirmani was killed and his companions Shaikh Sharif and Liaquat Shah sustained injuries when three gunmen opened fire on them outside the Mailsi tehsil army monitoring team office in the Quaid-i-Azam Road Bazaar on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Mailsi city police have registered a case on the report of Imran Babar, who remained unhurt in the attack, against three unidentified assailants. Our Vehari correspondent adds: A large number of TJP activists reached Ziaul Hasan's ancestral village Shah Sattar from all corners of Vehari district to attend his funeral.

The funeral prayers for the other victim, Shaikh Sharif, were also offered there and his body was sent to his native town, Kehror Pucca for burial. After the funeral, angry people raised slogans against the government for failing to improve the law and order situation in the country.

A heavy police contingent with an armoured carrier was deployed at Shah Sattar to avert any untoward incident. Meanwhile, at least three people had been arrested in connection with the murder of three TJP men. One of them was identified as Azhar, a resident of Arain Vahin village, Mailsi. Police did not disclose the names of the other two.
