Bodyguard killed in attack on TJP leader

JHANG, Feb 17: A Tehrik-i-Jafria leader had a narrow escape while his bodyguard died in shooting by two unknown motorcyclists in Shortkot, 40km from here, on Saturday afternoon.

Reports said that Altaf Husain Shah, TJP's Shorkot president, was returning to his house from the tehsil courts where he had gone to pursue a case. He was accompanied by his bodyguard, Nayyer Abbas Qureshi, who was sitting behind him on the motorcycle.

When they reached near Haidri Chowk in a busy area of the town, two unidentified young men riding a motorcycle opened fire on them with automatic weapons.

Nayyer Abbas died on the spot while Altaf Husain Shah sustained minor injuries. The assailants escaped.


JHANG: Akram Lahori awarded death sentence

JHANG, July 9 2001: The special judge of the anti-terrorism court on Monday handed down death to accused Akramul Haq Lahori for murdering the bodyguard of a Shorkot TJP leader.

The convict had shot dead Nayyar Abbas, the bodyguard of TJP Shorkot president Altaf Husain Qureshi in Shorkot town on February 17 last.

Announcing the judgment in the Jhang district jail, judge Chaudhry Muhammad Ikram also imposed a fine of Rs100,000 on the convict. The amount will be paid to the heirs of the deceased.

He was also fined Rs100,000 for spreading terror in the area. In case of default, the convict will have to undergo 10 years hard jail. The convict will serve 10 years in jail for possessing illicit arms.

Co-accused Mohammad Shakeel Shah, Qari Ghulam Rasool and Younis have been sentenced to life term and fined Rs100,000 each.

The fine amount will be paid to the heirs of the deceased.

The judge acquitted accused Khalid Ghani, Nazir Ahmad, Mohammad Farooq, Mohammad Siddiq, Hafiz Mohammad Ali, Ikhlaq Ahmad, Mohammad Amjad and Ghulam Abbas giving them the benefit of the doubt.
