QUETTA, Sept 13: A Professor of the Balochistan University was seriously injured and his young son killed in an armed attack on their car at Sariab Road by unidentified terrorists on Thursday, police said.
Atiq Hasan Naqvi, who is a professor of the Social Works Department of the Balochistan University, went to Sariab area, along with his son, Arshad Hasan, to drop his daughter-in-law to a school in the locality.
After dropping her, both father and son were on their way back when two masked terrorists appeared on the main road and opened indiscriminate fire, seriously wounding Prof Atiq Hasan Naqvi and killing his son, Arshad Hasan, on the spot.
The people of the area took both father and son to civil hospital. Arshad received a bullet in his head while Prof Atiq received two bullets in his chest and another in his leg.
The condition of Prof Atiq was improving after an emergency operation was performed by doctors to take out bullets.
The accused, who were riding a motorcycle, escaped from scene after the incident.
Talking to Dawn, a senior police official said that the incident appeared to be sectarian-motivated but "we will look into other aspects also."
It was the second incident of sectarianism in the area in the two last weeks. Earlier, Abid Abbas Naqvi, an engineer in the Communication and Sorks Department, was gunned down by unknown terrorists at the Sariab Road.
The police have registered a case against unknown terrorists.
PROTEST PROCESSION: Meanwhile, the Shia community, carrying the body of Arshad, took out a protest procession against what they called armed attacks on the members of their community in Quetta.
The protesters tried to go to the Governor's House but the police and officials of the local administration blocked all roads leading to the Governor's House.
Later, the protestors, after marching through different city roads, dispersed peacefully.
The Shia organizations, including the Tehrik-i-Jafaria Pakistan, Quetta chapter, has given a call for strike on Friday to protest against the incident.
Meanwhile, the President of Academic Staff Association of the Balochistan University, Agha Mohmmad Nasir, has strongly condemned the incident. He demanded of the provincial government to take measures for the early arrest of the killers.
