DERA ISMAIL KHAN, May 7: The Senior Superintendent of Police, Ijaz Ahmad Langarial, was shot dead in a suspected sectarian attack here on Monday.
Mr Langarial was having an evening stroll in the cantonment area
, near the Offices Club, when four unidentified people, riding two motor bikes, appeared and opened fire, injuring him seriously.
An army major, living nearby, took him to CMH. Doctors said the Senior Superintendent of Police had died on the operation table. It was the first act of terrorism in the cantonment area.
Mr Langarial had also served as commandant, Frontier Constabulary and Balochistan Scouts, and Hangu Police School. Official sources said he had been receiving threats from a sectarian organization after Muharram.
SSP shot in Dera Ismail Khan laid to rest
MULTAN, May 8: SSP Dr Ijaz Ahmad Langarial, shot dead in Dera Ismail Khan on Monday, was laid to rest here on Tuesday.
The funeral prayers, offered at Lines No 1 were attended by a large number of police officers including the Dera Ismail Khan DIG, Muhammad Abid, the Multan deputy commissioner, the Multan SSP, the City division SP and Railway Police SP.
Dr Langarial, a resident of Rohillanwali in Muzaffargarh district, is survived by his wife, Dr Qurratul Ain, and three children, Ainee, 7, Arsalan, 6, and Noman, 4. His in-laws live in Multan.
Serving as an ASP under the late SSP Muhammad Ashraf Marth, Mr Langarial had reportedly been instrumental in the police crackdown on sectarian terrorists.
The Dera Ismail Khan DIG, Muhammad Abid, told newsmen two teams had been organized to apprehend the killers. He said Dr Langarial had been receiving threats from a sectarian organization since the Ashura. He said the police did not have a clue yet that could lead to the arrest of killers.

DERA ISMAIL KHAN, May 9: The situation in and around the city is tense following the killing of the senior superintendent of police of Dera, Ejaz Ahmad Lagrial, three days back.
Police pickets have been set up on all entry points of the city and pillion riding has been banned. On Wednesday, dozens of motorbikes were impounded and many riders put into lock-ups for violating the ban.
On the call of the Sipah-i-Sahaba Pakistan, a token strike was observed by shopkeepers in the city. Many leaders have condemned the killing, demanded an inquiry into the incident as well as adequate compensation for the bereaved family.
IGP: Inspector General of Police, NWFP, Saeed Khan, has said that the police is still in the dark about identity of murderers of D.I. Khan SSP, Ejaz Ahmad Langrial, and motive behind the murder had also to be established.
Talking to this scribe at the local circuit house on Wednesday, he said the provincial government had issued the notification for transfer of Asif Nawaz Janjua as SP Dera and he would lead the investigation of the murder. Saeed Khan said a cash prize of Rs500,000 had been announced for help in tracing the murderers.
Our Peshawar Bureau adds: A leader of Pakistan People's Party, Sikandar Hayat Sherpao, has said that the killing of law enforcement agencies' personnel has proved the government's inefficiency in curbing terrorism. In a statement, he condemned the brutal murder of the senior superintendent of police Dera Ismail Khan, Ijaz Ahmad Langarial.
Regarding the government's deweaponization plan, the PPP leader said that disarming peaceful citizens would give a free hand to miscreants.
