Pesh Imam, Maulana Hussnain Naqvi, killed in Karachi

KARACHI Sep 04 2001: Unknown assailants, riding two motorbikes, shot a Pesh Imam dead near Ayesha Manzil roundabout within Gulberg police precincts, sources said. Maulana Hussnain Naqvi, Pesh Imam of Masjid-o-Imambargah-e-Hussainiya Sajjadiya, in his early-30s, was killed by four unknown assailants near Islamic Research Center.

Police said quoting eyewitness that the victim was on his way to Imambargah when the assassins intercepted him and opened fire. The victim sustained four bullets, three in the head and one in the arm, and died on the spot. His body was shifted to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.

Relatives and family members of the victim also reached the hospital and transported the body to the Masjid-o-Imambargah-e-Khair-ul-Umal, Incholi Society for funeral. "So far we have just gathered the information that the killers were four and riding two motorbikes," District Central Police Chief, SSP Syed Shaukat Ali Shah said.

Sources, close to the victim, told The News that the slain Pesh Imam was residing in Masjid-o-Imambargah-e-Hussainiya Sajjadiya, North Nazimabad and was unmarried. Though, on Monday, the police and Rangers after receiving a list of religious figures, leaders and activists of politico-religious groups and two banned sectarian organisations, conducted different raids and nabbed some three dozens people, but, the law enforcers had failed to nab the real culprits who were still at large.


Killers identified

KARACHI, Oct 2: Two prosecution witnesses identified one of the four accused in the murder case of Syed Ali Hasnain Naqvi, prayer leader of Sajjadia Imambargah, before a judicial magistrate.

A team of the Anti-terrorist Wing, headed by DSP Farooq Awan, last week arrested Mufti Mohammed Shahid Hanif, Khateeb, Jamia Masjid Malir 15; Talha Husain, Khalil alias Hasan Jan and Haider Ali and recovered four Kalashnikov rifles, four TT pistols and a motorcycle used in killings from their possession.

The prosecution witnesses, Imran and Zubair Naqvi, identified accused Shahid Mufti as one of the attackers. The four accused are in the custody of the ATW till Oct 6 for investigation and interrogation.
