Lawyer Syed Sardar Hussain Jafri shot dead in Karachi

KARACHI, May 15: Another lawyer was shot dead by some unidentified gunmen on Monday in a suspected sectarian violence, according to police. Syed Sardar Hussain Jafri, 55, was on his way to court on a motorcycle when some armed men intercepted him at Noman Phatak near Gilani Railway station in Gulshan-i-Iqbal and shot him dead. He was chairman of the Voice of Shia Federation.

The police said Mr Jafri suffered multiple bullet wounds and died on the spot. After the shooting scores of people gathered there but the assassins escaped.

Agencies add: Jafri was the third lawyer to be shot dead in the last three months. Earlier, Iqbal Raad and Waqar Naqvi were killed on March 10 and April 7 respectively.

Several newspapers here said they had received telephone calls from a man who identified himself as Riaz Basra and claimed his group was responsible for the murder.
